Hi all. I usually just posy on the N board, but a recent find has brought me here again. As we were driving to church tonight, I noticed an old tractor sitting behind one of the church member's homes. It had steel wheels on the rear, and the front end was hidden by some brush. It resembled an F-12 or Farmall Regular. At church, I asked about it. He said that it's a McCormick Deering Farmall, possibly a 1929, and that was all he knew. It was now owned my his deceased brother's 5 daughters. He also said any time I felt like it to come over and look at it, see what I could find out. I would like to pinpoint the model and year. How do I distinguish the model, with no decals or paint left on the machine? Where would the serial number be located? I intend to go look at it sometime this week, and I'll bring back pictures.

Thanks,

68 Mag

If it is a farmall regular the serial # tag should be on the tool box under the gas tank.If the tag is gone like most are the serial # should be stamped in the left rail of the tractor and stamped on the left side of the motor on a small machined surface near the front of the motor. On both of these surfaces take a wire brush and brush them and then take a piece of chalk and go over them will make it show up better.Hope this will help you.

29 was the first year for an oil filter to be used, so if no filter it is older than 29. it should also have an E4A mag unless it was changed. E4A's have an open impulse with a pawl and a tiny lever to flip the pawl and set the impulse, and a wide brass band around the magnet. As far as I know all regulars had brass carbs. I think the f-20's had cast iron.

I believe the serial number would be located on a support under the gas tank. Failing that their should be a serial number stamped into the drivers left side frame rail either up by the radiator or back by the transmission support that if not the same as the nameplate would be close enough to determine the year. If you have any interest in acquiring and restoring it this board is a very good place to start.

If it is a Farmall and a 1929 model, it is a Regular as that was the ONLY Farmall produced that year. To be sure it is a Regular, the steering gears in front will be out in the open, and there should be dropped gearings in the back.

IF the steering gear is closed and it still has drop housings in back it will be an F-20 or F-30. A Farmall with no drop housings is an F-12 or F-14.

Hope this helps.
