When was it that the M started comming out with the later front cover that allowed a live hydraulic pump to be bolted on without any modifications? I searched through the archives and so far have not been able to find out.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Taking the front off my M to change the front cover is more work than I feel like doing :-) I guess I will just stick with my PTO pump. I have a hand clutch on my M so I will sort of have live hydraulics.

Kirk, I belive that the change was made in the latter part of 1950 or the beggining of 1951.

The M&W Gear Company made a live pump that would bolt right on to a Farmall M without any changes required to the front cover or the timing gear.

There is a M&W pump on ebay now, it is listed for a Farmall W-9.

This pump should also be the same one that was used on the M model as well, JUST make sure that the W-9 was not a diesel model (they turn in the opposite direction).

The link to the auction is attached below.

As of this posting the reserve has not been met, and I don't know what the sellerset it at.

Rotation on the 9 series was hashed out several months ago. D Slater set the record straight. The diesel and the gas motors have the same rotation on the distributers. It is counter-clockwise looking toward the front. The 9 series gas motors have an idler gear that the 6 series doesn't. I hope the buyer isn't planning on using it on anything other than a 6 series diesel or either 9 series.

Don't all M&W pumps have a check ball system built in so that they can be used in either direction? I thought that was the case but I only have had one apart and that one had check valves to pressurize the front seal plate so it could be used in either direction.

Thanks Wardner, I diden't know in reply to Wardner, 02-18-2007 18:46:01
Thanks for the quick reply Wardner, I did not know about the idler gear in the 9 series.

Guess that throws this one in the trash.

Does the 6 series have the idler gear too?

No, that's my point. The gear layouts between the gas 6 and gas 9 series are different. It came as a surprise to most of us.

No idler on the 6 series gas motors. Idler on all 9 series and 6 series diesels.

I suspect that Dave will confirm later.

Wardner, another bit of information, not all MD and WD9 had the same bolt pattern where pump would bolt up. Even though they turn same direction not all pumps will work even between same size tractors. M&W didn't make one pump to fit all for the diesel and W9 series like they did on M. Most later MD, WD 6 and 600 used the same pump though, also 9 tractors if the magneto or distributor drive has a part # 261206 R1.
