Which one do you guys think?

Pre 1939?
Letter Series?
Number series, 00 series to 88 series?

I have my favorite from every series.

Just want opinions from different parts of the country.

BTW, I am from the Mississippi Delta and my family has close ties to Harvester Company until the "merger".

For each and everyone its that tractor sitting there in your garage or shed that you own. Its that tractor that no matter how low the funds are you still have whatever it takes to fix the problem. Even when it clunks or leaks a little oil its still your "baby".

When its nice outside you like to start it up and show it off,... you know, like you use to do with your wife.

When the old men come round dont you love to talk about your "baby"?. Yea, I know, so do I.

For me?, yea, it's a Super A but I am sure you all feel the same way about your tactor.

I have to lean toward letter series myself. I have put thousands of hours on C and M I have had for 30 years and the are still going strong. They dont have some of the creature comforts of others but they have stood the test of time. They also have great looks.

The best Farmall ever made was the H and M and their super versions. They were the only tractor made by ANY company that didn't have a single weak point on the entire tractor. The best overall tractors ever made. There is a reason they made thousand and thousand of them and a lot of them are still in use.

As far as the TA is concerned... I'm sure a lot of people starting in '54 treated them like a 12 year old boy treats his ding dong when he finds out it ain't just for writing his name in the snow. When the fascination wore off and he learned how it's meant to be used, hopefully he would realize that if he didn't go jerking it any time he felt the urge or someone wanted to see how it worked that it would cost him much less money in the long run. Perhaps the IH dealers should have told the ol' boys that if you used it too many times you may go blind. I'm sure I would have been guilty of pulling it back too instead of simply lifting the disk up and inch or two in the tough spots. Imagine how neat of an innovation this was back in the day. Anyone would have used it any chance they got. Bad TA practices are still used to this day. I almost got fired telling my dumb*** boss when I was 16 years old that you shouldn't use the TA to slow down for turning corners in road gear. That was his solution instead of simply throttling down. You see what I mean?

Mark

For looks and styling give me letter or super letter. If you want looks, styling plus a good useful tractor go 56 series.

My favorites are a 560 diesel wide front. The other two are a 706 gas and a 806 diesel wide fronts.

Hi, I have ran most all models from the F20 through the 86 series. My favorite is the 856, and I have never understood the TA problems. My 856 went 13,000 hrs on its original TA. I never had any complints about the 350D, 350DU, 450D, 756, 1468, or 886 either. Chuck

The Farmall H was the best Farmall tractor. It was easy to handle, easy to drive, easy on fuel, and many people liked them because the H could use a variety of implements. H is the best Farmall, I also like the M's, and my favorite letter series John Deere is the late model A, I also like the B G H D and the JD 60.

I like the F-series the best. From what Ive heard talking to people they were really good tractors back in their day. As for me, I like them because they look like dinasor skeletons compred to the newer letter and number series.

656 Farmall gas. manueverable, good on fuel til you work it hard, but not that bad either. perfect in field or yard. excellent traction without duals. comfy to operate all day. not much difference from tractors of today to this one. :) love the barking sound from the governor workin on it.

You gotta be nuts. Why would place 656 above a 706? As far tractors with a 263-291 in them the 756 or 706 with 756 shifters were and still are a lot better than a 656. Better torque, better transmission, better hydraulics.

u got a better power to weight ratio with a 656,
and a reliable transmission because of a much simpler design. 656 is smaller frame, more maneuverable in the yard and small fields. clutches easier than the big tractors too. things like that.

I suppose that you know that the real Brooks McCormick died last summer.

When you first started using that name four or five years ago, I thought you were the real one.

Yes I knew he passed away.

BTW, the SMTA without the TA was a good tractor, down here the TA stood for "take away", farmers got tired of their tractors being in the shop getting the TA fixed, just as soon leave it out.

I believe the "Letter Series" was best series of tractors and the SuperMTA without the TA was the best tractor ever.

Harold, it seems like that would be a rare tractor as I am sure the Company and most of its dealers would have preferred to sell the TA.

Would you settle for a SMTA with the range lever hanging on the tractor shed wall? Or a tractor with its planet gears welded to the carrier? To me, it is the TA & IPTO that makes that tractor. I have no interest in a SM.

Most all, at least a large percentage, of the tractors we sold in the Mississippi Delta were ordered and sold without TA. Much more reliable when operated exclusively by "tractor drivers" rather than "owner operators".

There it is in black and white. It's not the TA, but the OPERATOR that is the problem.

Lemme guess, you probably had hired help that would pull the TA going downhill to slow the tractor down, or would ease the lever ahead and back, letting things slip...

If you pull the TA on a SMTA going down hill you freewheel.

For whatever reason a fragile tractor does not cut it on large Delta farm. Crude and tough beats high tech and fragile under these conditions.

i would say the M AND H by far out shine any tractors ever made , seen many H,s used on the north dakota farms that pulled 3-14,s packer and press drill over hundreds of ackers was the M stronger yes but you could put a 11 or 12 year old up on an H and he could run it were the M was a bear ,that clutch and steering were terible. i have a 51 H with wide front end and live hyd, and 3-point i use a 10 foot ford disck on the back and somtimes if you raise it to fast the front wheels come of the ground, but never once does the tractor look over it,s shoulder and complaine about any thing, i think thats what i like about the M and H,s they just have no real up keep to them even after 60 years. have a 48 H at my cabin in northen michigan were we get over 200 inches of snow , have a 9 ft blade on the front have never been were i could not get in or out , look at some of my neigbors up ther that have 8-seies 600 or 800 fords all they doe is spin the wheels.have a 52 M and a super H that we use in the yard to junk cars with and never do they let us down , also have a 574 but if you over work it all it want,s to do cry all the time , yes i would think the M and H will be around for over 75 years and still do the work they were built for. my son just got a new Farmal DX-55 nice tractor but will it stand the test of time- i dont no.
