I took the fill plug off my tranny. that was fun, haad to grind down a piece of 1X1 angle iron to get it loosened. ANYWAYS. While I had it off, I looked inside with a flashlight. Gears seem to be in ok shape, except one. I'm trying to figure out which one it is, so If any of you have a 300u or simalir and have had it apart, I'd appreciate some help. If you are looking into the hole from the left side facing the tractor And you look in and down towards the bottom a hair to the right is a gear "combo" The left side of the gear has more teeth then the right side. The left side's teeth are more narrow then the right side. This is the gear with parts of some of the teeth gone. Not sure how many, but seems like most are in in good shape, but 3 of the teeth i can see are about 1/4 of the way gone. If this is a high speed gear, like road or 4th, It doesnt bother me, but if it is first or second, it kinda does, but not terribly, I just wanted to know what gears are in better shape so If I do some pulling with thr 2pt which gears to avoid if possible.

Are replacing these gears just a matter of removing the tranny cover, or is it more indepth?

Thanks guys!!

I feel like I'm getting to know this tractor better. Knowing what to expect and what to be more careful with in these old beasts are nice and gives me peace of mind when using it.

If indeed the gear your looking at is one piece with two sets of teeth and on top shaft of transmission, only one it can be is the 2&3 sliding gear.

D slater, I'm almost certain it is on the bottom shaft of the tranny. I might actually be the 3rd and 4th drive gears back to back, I cant tell really. Not gonna get too worried about it...

Moms got the cam or else I'd have taken some pictures....

Jay, all gears on bottom shaft are seporate but may look like one piece. If its a sliding gear you can look in hole and shift gears to see if it moves.

I am/having been looking at case-ih's site. from what I can determine it is the driving gear for 4th gear, so I'm not going to worry about it, I rarely use 4th gear. I'm still trying to figure out why I grind gears. I cant think what would cause that if the tractor is stopped, its not from the rear end moving. Only thing I can think of is somehow the clutch is still moving the input gears to the transmission. I may try to mess with that. Is there a direct connection through the clutch? Does the throwout bearing transfer motion through the clutch if its not proerly lubricated? Sorry, I've never had a manual clutch apart to know how its actually assembled, and caseih's parts site doesnt show them in the same illustration. It is the only explaination I can think of.

Have you checked the clutch adjustment? If you don't have TA (torque Amplifier), the adjustment is usually based on a specified free travel of the pedal. If you have TA, it's a little more involved and you should get a book.
Other problems could be in the clutch or the pilot bearing in the flywheel but these would require major disassembly to repair.
Someone with experience and taking a personal first hand look could give a better guess. K-Mo

Do not fret, these are straight cut sliding gear transmissions. They will grind a little no matter what you do. Ignore it. It is no consequence. The action of the pilot bearing, inertial of the clutch disk, and motion of the tractor cause inevitable minor raking of a few teeth to get it ino gear. Do not avoid 4th it is not broken until it jumps out of gear, or makes loud noise. Almost all have a few nicks in the teeth. Don't worry, be happy. JimN

Not worrying. If one gear goes out, I have 4 others!! hehe. 4th is used the least, so I'm not worrying. It's just nice to know if you are a mile from disaster that could take out more with it, or a few inches from just a lost gear.

Its a good thing, cause I dont wanna take the clutch cover off again it was a PITA to get that plate formed back to the contours and to make a new gasket for it.

Gear replacement is a major teardown. Checkout the parts breakdown on www.caseih.com follow "Search for Parts". It should help you identify the gear you are looking at.
