There was a question on here about where to find a copper head gasket for an H.

There was a response that Lubbock makes the copper and regular gaskets. My question is, what is the decision process as to whether to use a copper or "regular" gasket? are there advantages of one over the other?

Copper "gaskets" are primarily for containment of combustion pressures in modified engines. As Rusty indicates they also raise compression a bit. They are not the right stuff for general purpose repair as they are much less compliant to slight surface imperfections, and bolt tightness variations. More of a racing solution. They are very good when sealing extreme pressure, They also conduct heat very well. JimN

Don't quote me on this, but I think the copper gasket is thinner, which would increase compression, in turn increasing horsepower.
