Why isnt my engine getting warm?

I kinda thought my temp guage was messed up since its the factory one. It never registered ANYTHING. So I took it out, and brought it inside and submerged it in boiling water, nothing. So I got an aftermarket one in there, that checked out fine with the boiling water test. The gauge doesnt register anything when in the tractor. The beginning of the aftermarket gauage is 130 degrees. Now I thought that maybe someone didnt wanna spend the 18$ on a new thermostat, or maybe the one in there was stuck open. Well its in there and its closed. I checked it for opening and closing properly and its working fine. I plan to check the pump for flow by removing the radiator cap while shes running. I know its not getting warm cause I can touch the head and theres barely any heat detectible.

I have read in the past that if you arent working these things that they dont get hot. but not even warm? I'll admit I havent done any heavy dragging with it. If this is true that they dont get hot if you dont work them, isnt that a concern running them so cold? The tractor is mainly a loader tractor, but this soummer I plan to use my blade/scraper to work some ground flat.

Should I be concerned? I know I seem kinda paranoid about this tractor, but I feel its better to be over protective, then to just run it into the ground.
Thanks Guys!!

MY 300U ALSO BARELY COMES OUT OF THE COLD ZONE ON THE GUAGE. A NEW REPLACEMENT THERMOSTAT HELPED A LITTLE A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN I RECORED THE RADIATOR,BUT, AFTER ALL,IT WAS 45 YEARS OLD.I KEEP THE GRILL COMPLETELY COVERED ALL WINTER.IN THE SUMMER,THE GUAGE WILL GO TO RUN ZONE ONLY WHEN WORKING VERY HARD IN HOT WEATHER.

What I did for my H before the new thermostat came was soon as I started it up, spread a garbage bag over the grill. The fan pull holds it firm and neat, and once the gauge starts to rise, it can be rolled down to adjust how much air passes through.
Good Luck, Wm

I have a 300u and have the same problem unless you cover the radiator up part way and run it hard you won't see the temp budge. Also check the fan pully as mine is adjustable to lower or raise the belt in the groove, this makes a diffrence in the speed the fan and alt/gen run

The built in bypass in the housing that contains the Tstat was designed too large. It allows too much bypass water to flow to the rad. If I was using the tractor the way you are, I would restrict the bypass port to get it warmer. A 1/4" hole would do the needed circulation, and allow warming of the engine. My opinion, JimN

Jim,
Are you referring to the square hole in the front of the thermostat housing? I thought thats what it was and was going to not cut the gasket so large in that port, but I didnt wanna fudge anything up and gasket material coming loose was a bit of a concern. Its all back together now, so I dunno..

BTW, is the fan supposed to be the same rpm all the time (considering you dont change the throttle), or should it be like the pre-electric cooling fans on cars with the temperature sensitive assembly, where it would spin faster as the engine got higher in temp, or is it a fixed fan blade?

Now that I think about it, they are vastically overcooled by design. Did the 300u come stock with radiator shutters? There is none on mine.

Thanks Guys.

Yes that is the port I refer to. The fan is direct drive and changes speed with the engine RPM, not cooling demand. And there were never shutters offered on that tractor unless it was ordered as a dual fuel, (and it wasn't) I would bet there were very few made that way. If yours is a 12v, I would take the fan off, and put an electric accessory fan (automotive junkyard part cheap) and blow through the radiator from the engine side to the grill. Use a thermostatically controlled fan switch to turn it off and on. JimN

hahaha, i was gonna mention doing that, but feared it sounded kinda excessive.

You know me, I'm not into spending money. I have quite a few electric cooling fans, but I'll have to see. If my 12v conversion goes through good, and this summer working it doesnt get the temp up at all, I might invest in this, or see about one of the ones I have working. The ones I have are from cars where clearance wasnt a biggie and probably wont fit, the aftermarket ones are alot slimmer, but are also alot junkier when it comes to bearings, heh.

I guess that all assumes the fan mounting bolts will come loose, and it doesnt require removing the whole front end to get that blade out.

I'll tell you what, whoever designed that thermo housing with the grove for the thermostat to sit being in the top housing is in idiot. with such a short hose, its not very easy getting it all lined up, heh. I guess theres always been design hiccups. =)

Thanks Jim.

Have you put a thermomenter in the coolant to see what the temp is??

Cover your radiator up all the way with card board and then drive it for 15 20 minutes then she'll come up to temp. It worked on my M.

Work it, she'll come up.

IH tractors are massively over-cooled by design.

Jay are you running tractor hard enough to warm it up? My old M don't show much temp just loafing around say raking hay or other light chores it will show around 110 degress, but hook it to a 10 foot disk and it goes up to 190 in a short while.

BTW It's a IH 300U c169 gas

Could running a little rich cause it to run colder? I think I got it a tad rich, but its not blowing black smoke , but the flapper gets sooty after several hours of running.

Check the timing and fuel mixture.
Other than that you might not be working it hard enough.

I plan to check the timing here pretty soon. While im laidoff, I'm doing what I can to get her ready for summer, been doing alot of fix what the other guy hobbed together things, from inadequate bolts for the fasthitch to fixing grease zerks, and so on.

I am currently doing the same thing to my 2444.
Running ritch and the timing is a bit retarded. Checked but not adjusted. A friend has the same tractor and it warms right up , but mine is a bit cold blooded.
