Adding a ta to a ta delete tractor

I have a real nice F504D, has 1700 actual documented hours on the original working tach. I developed a transmission shaft leak at a local plow day this past fall. Got an appointment with our independent mechanic who was IH trained in the seventies to do the repair. He just called me, says "ya know, if you ever wanted to put a ta in this tractor, now is the time". I had been thinking about this off and on for the ten years that I have owned the tractor. He says it would run about $1200 to add the ta. Biggest problem would be coming up with the linkages but there are several good salvage yards close by. Am thinking I may just go on ahead and have him do it. If this were a high houred, worn out tractor, I would not even consider it but due to the low hours and excellent shape of the tractor I am seriously considering doing it. Sure could use that ta pulling the fast hitch 311 mounted plow. The tractor will pull the plow in third for the most part but when I hit a tough spot, I have to stop and shift to second. So, therefore, I usually just run in second to avoid the shifting up and down.

What do you all think? For $1200, is it worth the expense or not?

JD: What are you waiting for, you know the benefits of TA as well as anyone on here.

I do wonder however, if you will get a TA for the money these guys are talking without a core. Maybe you should trade out the eliminator kit first for a core. Not saying I'm right, but it is worth checking out. Then when you look at the TA lever and linkage, maybe your best bet is buy a donor tractor. See how quick we can get you spending money.

I told a guy that the other day, he was appologizing for taking so much of my time advising him. I told him not to worry, retired old farts like me don't have a lot to do anyhow. I get great enjoyment out of spending other folks money these days.

Personally, I think in another 20 years a 504 diesel with low hours and factory TA delete is going to be worth more than your run-of-the-mill 504 with a TA...

Is a TA useful for your situation? Definitaly.

Are you going to damage the future value of the tractor? Maybe.

Would I spend $1200 to lower the value of one my own tractors? Nope.

Pure speculation and free advice - you get what you pay for.

I would save what is left, the removed parts, and if a TA delete proves to be profitable down the road, just remove the TA, and install the old parts and viola, a TA delete, just like it was, and nobody would be the wiser.

=)

Y'know, the TA delete hardware has value. Your net cost will be less than $1200.

A TA is worth that much to improve the unit. Because you use the tractor it will be a nice feature of primary value to you., Imagine trying to find a comparable new piece of equipment for under 40,000. Do it. JimN

Aha! Another reason to melt down those moldboard plows!

third party image

Here is a photo of the tractor. Red paint is original, the white side curtains have been repainted. Loader was bought new with the tractor, and that is original paint. I added the Schwartz wide front at the turn of the century.

I kinda thought that might be what it was (1500 or 1700 series). Id sure like to find one of those for our 424. Thanks for the info.

I have the original owner's manual for the tractor and the loader, too. That original owner also purchased a new #200 IH fast hitch blade when he bought the tractor and loader, and I have it and the original manual for it, too. Sure is a neat old package to have aquired, especially with no more hours or usage than it has on it. The blade is missing some paint, I would say it has sat out a lot in it's life, but there is no noticeable wear on it at all.

Pay no attention to 'ol gordo Jere. He doesn't know how to use a moldboard plow.

If the money isn't a problem, I always thought that deleting the T/A took away a lot of the usefulness of a tractor. I think you'd like using it with the T/A restored.
