IH 140 - Dist to Alternator conversion: Bracket?

I bought the alternator (10 SI) and diodes recommended on this websight and am dumbfounded how to mount it on my 140. Removing the distributor front bracket (the one bolted with 2 bolts to the engine front) would require removing the front sheetmetal, hoses, etc. This would allow making a custom bracket but is a lot of work. Another way is to hacksaw 1 1/4" from the alternator aluminum mounting shroud and then mount it in front of the existing bracket. This would line things up but would only leave 3/4" of the shroud which is 2" wide now.

Any advice on the best way to mount the alternator would be appreciated.

Nawlens: I did the conversion on my 140 without too much trouble. You do need to fabricate a bracket to attach the base of the alternator to the engine block and you can get a top bracket at any auto parts store. You don't need to fool around with the shroud. I don't know how to post a picture, but if you email me I will send you one.

J.

I priced the alternator base mount for the 140 at an IH dealer several years ago. It was $114.00! One little casting. I wish I could borrow one for an hour to make a functional equivalent in my shop. With no pattern, I usually have to make 3 of something like that, getting closer each time. The third one usually works. Anyone know of source for reasonably priced used one?

I have that alt mounted in my 140. That was before my time but the shroud is bent around the alt. Its cut about half and half and then bent out. I do remember its a tight fit. I can take some pics if you want.

Randy: There is no need to cut or bend the shroud, it can be done without. The secret is a deep pulley, even two belt pullies from 1980s V8 GM engine will give enough clearence, using the outer pulley to drive the alternator.

I have 3 of these alternators on Super A, 130 and 140. I will admit the 140 was the hardest to overcome, but it is do-able without cutting or bending anything.

Hugh,

Mine was done years ago and I dont even know who did it. On my SA that Alt fit fine without doing anyting much but on the 140 I saw that the shroud was bent out and around the alt.

That would be a REAL tight fit if that shroud wasnt modified in some way.

Did'nt I see that Mitsubish Alt was about the same size at the old Generator? I wonder if that wouldnt be a better choice now?

Randy: My alternator is a GM delco, it sits exactly same place as the generator that was on there, and the alternator drive pulley is 1" from the factory shroud. The alternator is below the factory hood and the back side is about 1" from engine block, just enough room to allow the throttle linkage to operate freely behind it.

The mount I fabricated for this cost me less than $20. By using the double GM pulley, it lines the old brace for tightening belt perfectly. I put it on 3 years ago, tightened belt once, and it's been trouble free ever since.

That's correct. The distributor/alternator is mounted on the port side of the tractor.

Geese. I do mean generator, not distributor.

Thinking one thing, typing another.

Wish one could edit one's post.

Nawlens: I fabricated one of these, it put the alternator very close to same position as the generator had been. I did not have to disturb the shroud. Before describing this for you I'd like to go to my shop, look it over close, take a few measurments, etc. It's been 3 years, thus some details have sliped my recall.

I can tell you the first step I take in installing an alternator on one of these offset Farmalls, is find a dual pulley from a 1980s V8 GM car or pickup engine. This allows you to set alternator back just a bit giving more room by using the outer pulley, for the belt.
