Where does the 18ga wire with diode from the alternator go? I understand the load side of the inition switch, but I have 2 different key switches (2 tractors, both IH 140's, 12V neg Grnd).

One has a 2 position key switch that sends votage to the coil when on, and a push button switch that turns the starter over with or without the key switch.

The other has a 3 position key switch that sends voltage to the coil when in position 2, and voltage to the magnetic relay (which engages the starter)when in position 3 (spring loaded, temporary on).

I'm guessing the 18 ga wire with diode goes to the coil side of the key switch in each case. Am I right?

Any help appreciated.

Jim is right, to further elaborate, this wire needs a "switched" power from the battery. This is accomplished by connecting it to the same terminal the coil is connected to on the switch. When the switch is in the run postion, power will go to the coil and also to the alternator which turns it "on".

n the one with a button start, it goes to the coil side of the sw.
On the Off Run Start sw, it goes to the terminal connected to the coil, not starter.
