I guess I don't have the computer saavy to get the picture posted on this discussion forum.

IT IS HOWEVER, posted in the tractor photos section. Please let me know what you think. This is the first tractor I've tried to buy other than some old H's, M's B's etc. and I definately don't want a whole can of worms that will nickle and dime me to death.
Thanks
DJL

Dj,

Couple of things are jumping out at me on this one. Not trying to cut down your tractor in any way; just giving you a couple of ideas to think about before you jump in the swim.

First off, is that price. The feller is selling that pretty loader and the repaint on the tractor. He's making $2K on you right off the bat 'cause this tractor/loader is at best a $9K setup.

Now, add another $1745 for a set of rear tires, mounted and filled and your're crowding $13K for this rig and you haven't even loaded it on the trailer yet. Did you notice that it only has 34" rear tires on it?

First order of business is to run the serial number. Should be located down on the lower transmission housing area on the right side. If you find the serial number up on the left side bell housing, this is an older tractor that has been given the late model "black stripe" paint/decals.

Buying a repaint is the scarest thing there is; you just don't know what you're getting. So, you have to do the next best thing to figure out what you are really buying into.

Before you ever start it, pull the dipstick to make darned sure that there isn't any anti-freeze in the oil indicating that it needs an engine. This one has the anti-freeze filter; you can see it right under the "dorf" on the loader's name stencil.

Take a flashlight and some rubbing compound; see if you can make out the hours on the tach. If it is up there around 7900-8500 hours and has never been opened up, this is a possible candidate for a split for a clutch and PTO input gear/seal. That gear eats away with time/use and is a normal thing.

Watch the hitch. Shut off the tractor with the hitch in the up position. It should stay there. If it drops, there could be hydraulic issues.

Your tractor originally came with 9.5L X 15" tires on the front. Luckily, the loader is a smaller unit, really designed for a small frame tractor and I doubt that it has hurt that tractor all that much. Depending on what you are going to be using the tractor for, it really is set up right. Let the loader take the heat, not the tractor.

Lastly, get it out of your head that it isn't going to "nickel and dime" you. 'Course it is. It's a 30 year old tractor at best. :>)

Good luck with your purchase. Hope you get a good one and keep us updated, will ya?

Allan

The nickle and dimes on tractors are a little bigger than normal nickle's and dime's. :)) But some good advice.

DJL, Nice looking 966 w/ loader! If you get this ol girl, First thing is to call.... Gensco Aircraft Tires @ Houston, Texas, # 800-663-5287. Order 2, 32 x 11.5 x 15 tires to replace those that are allready on your tractor. They will run in the neighborhood of $70. Take them to a repitable industrial tire shop get them mounted on your wheels and get about 4 to 5 gal of tire sealant added and you will be good to GO. You shouldn't need tires for 10 yrs there about. If you have a Fastline catalogue, look at the pic in the ad, it is the style of tire that is in the background, with the lip on the side. Mount the lip to the outside of the wheel. These are nose wheels for a Boeing 727, That lip deflects water away from and off of the brake assembly in rainy situations.
I am on my 2nd set, my first lasted 10 yrs so I bet yours will do close to that. After you run theste you will stop having tire problems, or worring about heavy loads in the bucket. I will Never run a standard Ag tire on my loader tractor again. Hope this helps. Later,
John A.

So when I take the trek 400 miles to look at this old gal, here's some of the things I want to look for/at: Does it have the coolant filter on engine, oil pressure reading at warm operating temp, check the TA, visual oil/fluid leaks, condition/sloppiness in shifting levers and front steering/tie rods etc.

Anything else you guys could coach me on?

JimN - Thanks for putting it in there for me, and for the tutorial. Sounds easy enough!

That's part of the reason I like this site and particularly the IH forum so much. You guys are a wealth of information and always willing to help a guy out!

There should be no reason why an attmpted picture posting is not successful. If you get a picture in the preview, you will get a picture in the thread.

If it doesn't doesn't show up in the preview, then you have screwed up. No picture in your post means that you have to try something different. Just remember "If at first you dont't succeed, try, try again". Words to live by.

Looks to be in decent shape.

Are you sure those are 16 inch rims on the front.

If so there's not much rubber between the rim and ground.

Those Westerdorf loaders are a good loader also.

On the front tires, I'm guessing those are the 15"'ers. I was inquiring about putting 11 or 14 X 16's on her. Guessing I'd have to find different rims to make that work though.

What's wrong with the front tires? They look like they're in better shape than the rears.
