I am installing a new distrubutor in my H and I have set everything as I believe it should be, rotor is pointing to #1 the timing marks are lined up as they should be.

The firing order is 1-3-4-2 and they are in the same order as they were before I replaced everything.

The motor pops, but she won't catch. I haven't got a repair manual, so I'm not for sure on the plug wires.

Can anyone give me some suggestions, besides for buying a manual. She normally runs great and We are almost running.

Thanks, Doc

That Pop! believes me to think your timing is advanced in turn leads to that distributor you changed out. Pull the #1 plug & stroke it to the compressed position (there numerous ways to accomplish this....pick one) then pull the cap & check the rotor. Pull & re-position the distributor with the rotor pointing to #1 then check the cap's contacts & for hair line cracks....stop...round the motor & check the point gap...ok...re-fasten the cap. Now trace & snap on the wires 1-3-4-2....Stop an open a beer take a sallow then set it down. Pull the starter switch out & hit the starter. Back purrrrr rrrrr rin' like a kitten. Ok...finish that beer.

Doc, I had the same trouble as you when I replaced a mag with a dist on my tractor. When I removed the dist. cap I noticed the rotor turning the opposite direction to the crankshaft. Changed the wires and away she went. ----- --Harold

I use a mag lite to see when the piston on compression stroke is T.D.C. Then its easier to set the dist to fire on #1

Stick your finger in the number one plug hole, and turn the crank until the compression pushes finger out. When this happens, recheck the distributer to see if the rotor is still pointed to number one spark plug

If you can get a helper, turn the distributor while holding down the starter button. If it wont hit then you dont have the wires on the cap right.

Did you turn the engine over while the distributor was out of the tractor? If so, you may have it half a rotation off. Both valves should be closed on number one and building compression when the rotor comes to that wire. IF not, then I would recheck the dwell, (gap) and make sure the timing is not to far advanced or retarded.
