Power steering valve thingy

I see all of the char-lynn style power steering units with a separate power steering pump for sale. I assume they are for a Farmall with a belly pump? I say this because a SMTA and a 450 doesn't have a separate pump for the power steering. This leads me to my question. How does the valve that diverts hydraulic pressure to the power steering pump work? I grew up on my dads SMTA and I can never remember not having power steering even when lifting a loader full of snow and steering at the same time. Is it some sort of a diverter or priority valve? I've never given it any thought before but now I'm looking to add power steering to my SM stage two and I'd rather not add a pump for the power steering. I'd rather add the "power steering valve thingy" instead. It just seems simpler and cleaner to me.

I looked in to how those valves work on the internet, pretty neat. I just never gave them any thought before. I think that may be the way to go for my project. I'm putting a 2-71 Detroit Diesel into a '53 SM. I'm going to drive a hydraulic pump directly off the front of the crank. I've spent too much money already rebuilding the steering completely. I'm just planning for the future when I can add power steering. I think the valve set up is the way to go vs. the seperate power steering pump.

You may be able to use the standard bracket, BUT you will need to make a tapered apadapter to mount the torque generator up to the orginal bracket.

The bracket that OEM sells is made to the specs of an orginal bracket that was supplied by the Char-Lynn company when one of their kits was installed on a Farmall M tractor.

The bracket from OEM has the offset made in it, so no tapered adapter is required.

Torque generators can be found at a salvage yard for around $100 and rebuilt. Other prices are correct, you need the coupler and gauge bracket.

If I was going to add power steering again, I think I would buy a rotary valve and go full on hydraulic steering with a hydraulic ram on the tie rods - that would take a lot of possible slack areas out of the system!

some hydro blocks did not come with power steering valve in it. After market units are in there place. You would have to find a hydro block with the valve to do what you want and find an IH unit to fit the M.

This doesn't look like the valve on a SMTA. Is it from a 450?
