Hi folks. I do not post here often but read this forum pretty much every day. What a great bunch of people. Anyway I am to present myself at our hospital at 6:00am tomorrow to have my prostate removed. My 87 year old dad has prostate cancer and I guess that it was just a matter of time before it showed up in me. I have been getting myself checked regularly for some years now as well as PSA tests. My wife is going in with me and(we live on a smallish island with no hospital) we have neighbors who are going to feed the cows, etc.

Have any of you guys been through this? How did it go? I must admit that I am pretty anxious.
Karl

I had mine removed two years ago. Wore a hose and a bag for two weeks, wet my pants for three months. Doing great now.

Thanks guys. Almost time to go. Now I have some inkling how the truckloads of lambs feel when they leave the farm. JUst kidding, I think. I know I will be in good hands.

Dad had it done when he was about 67. They first did the roto-rooter thing and found 20% of the cells were cancerous. They offered 1.) complete removal of the prostate, 2) chemo therapy, 3) just watch and wait and see what happens. My sister was an anethesiologist at that time and she scheduled the complete removal and told him he was going to have it done. He was incontinent for about a year but gradually regained control. He is 93 now and still cancer free. Quality of life at 93 is just about nil however.

I had a "Scrape" last year about this time. They remove some "stuff" and deflate the prostrate. That was 3 days in the hospital. Took about a month to recover.
My neighbor accross the street had his removed. He wore a cathiter and the bag for 6 weeks. Its not fun. Bottom line: You need it and you will get through it. Hopefully you have some kind of relationship with the Lord. It will be a great help. I will pray for you. Jim

There's a man that lived on the farm next to us. We ran around together. He got drafted in 1952 and I was drafted in 1953. He had that operation about 10 years ago. He went through the VA and received about 38 chemo treatments. He seems to be doing well so far. Good Luck, Hal
