Chris from Wa asked a good question Why spin out wheels on a 460U? The only thing I can think of is a trailer to narrow?? While on that topic and being ignorant. (never having had a tractor with spin out wheels) I know you have to loosen the lock nuts and brake the opposite side, but do you have to jack up that wheel or will it move in and out while on the ground? Anyone with experience that would advise me, would be appreciated.

Gary: As I told Chris, spin out wheels made one H@!! of a splash in the late 50, every company had them, and 5 years later, almost as quick as they came, they were gone. I've heard a few farmers swear by then and a lot of farmers swear at them. I'm not about to say who was right or who was wrong, but they are gone.

Most utility tractors in this part of country have spin out wheels. You do not have to jack it up. There are lock nuts on each rail that hold rim to center dish these need to be loosened the same amout on each(count threads) then you loosen the stops they should be on one rail only. Move one stop to desired possition put tractor in gear hold opposite brake and release clutch. Depending on whether moving in or out dictates forward or reverse gear. Once rim has moved to desired place tighten stops on rail, then retighten the locking nuts at rim & rail. It is very important to tighten the same on each rail this will assure that wheel is centered properly. It has been my experiance with these that once they are moved it is almost impossible to get them centered just right and the wheels will wobble. smaller rims will have 4 rails and larger ones will have 6. Very few row crop tractors have these most of them have sliding wheels. Sorry I didn't explain this better.

Spin out wheels keep you from having to remove the rims from the tractor to adjust for different spacings. I have never adjusted one, but I think you can do it with the wheel on the ground. Spin out wheels are just as useful on a utility as they are on a row crop in that they make adjustment easier. Utilities can be used to plow and cultivate, just like a row crop, if that is what you are getting at.

A lot of larger (90 hp) Massey Fergusons have them still. They were popular on smaller tractors around here.
