No the whole unit shouldn't need to be replaced. It will need to be removed to make repair's. When TA is engaged the rollers lock up on the ramp to drive the unit. Once they are worn so much they can not lock up on the planet carrier, this is where the slippage occurs. It is possible the clutch could be bad, but more than likely it is the over running clutch ramp.

Yeah, the whole unit may not need to be replaced, but do you really want to chance it? It's a royal pain in the petard to pull that TA, and to do it multiple times because you missed something... How much is your time worth?

I say pull the unit and replace it with the newer, stronger sprag style TA, and never ever worry about it again. A little extra now for peace of mind... Ramp and rollers will run you $200, but an entire TA really isn't that much more when you take your time into account.

There are a set of rollers in the ramp that wear due to misuse that are usually the problem. This is caused by free wheeling over hill and letting the tractor overrun the unit. If you have a manual it will show this set up. If not you will need one. The tractor will have to be split to make repairs. The last set I put in was around 200 bucks for new rollers, springs, retainer plugs.
