C Hydraulic Pump Problem

I have 1949 C that leaks hydraulic fluid into the crank case. I did a little research into the problem, found an article dealing with the issue (here I think),and concluded it was a couple of worn o rings in the unit. Is this a problem that can be easily fixed, or is this kind of problem usually more complicated that a couple of o rings? Would I be better off just finding a quality replacement pump? Any idea what they might cost me?

You probably have a groove worn into the pump shaft where the seal (No.4) rubs the shaft. A speedi-sleeve from NAPA and new seal will probably fix the problem. Hal

Mornin Tim, Jim pretty much covers the whole topic. I just thought I would add that the pump shaft on my 49 Super A had a slight groove worn in the pump shaft. I took the pump apart and just polished that spot and installed a new o-ring along with some o-ring grease and it works great. No more loss of fluid to the crankcase. Like Jim states if the groove is very slight it shouldnt be a problem. If it doesnt solve the problem then you can try a speedi sleeve or a rebuilt unit !

Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to check out the shaft and give the o rings a try if it looks good or just needs a little work. I think maybe I'll hold off though on a needed oil change until I see how my repair job turns out!

If the endframe of the pump is not worn where the shaft goes through (housing as the bearing) it can probably be fixed. If the shaft is not grooved where the Oring rubs, a new high quality BunaN or synthetic Oring will fix it.
If the pump shaft is grooved under the location of the Oring, it might be possible to have a slightly larger (maybe metric or teflon based)Oring put in that tightens it up. Another option ids to machine out the housing and put in a regular seal in a little different spot to avoid the groove. Or a speedy sleeve could be used to cover the groove, but the Oring groove must be machined deeper, and the ID of the oring shaft hole made larger to accomodate the speedy sleeve. The sleeve must be placed on the shaft after assembly or the shaft won't fit in the end bearing. Good luck, JimN
