Just installed a new clutch engagement lever on my Cub and the new plate on the outside that holds the shifter. I have a belly mower on it and it will not stay in gear. It appears that I need another 1/4 inch or so movement on the lever. I am thinking about modifying that plate although it is machined for that spot. I am not anxious to wear out that lever again, it is costly and not so easy to install. Any ideas Are welcome. ED

I read through the Cub PTO failures and it was interesting in that it discussed my problem on my Cub. The previous mechanic who worked on my Cub had installed the transmission input shaft seal backwards creating about 1/4 inch of play in the transmission shaft which connects to the PTO spline. With this seal installed wrong, the transmission shaft slides forward and the PTO will bearly ingage and ends up grinding the splines off the transmission shaft. I ended up having to replace the transmission shaft and putting the seal in the correct way to solve the problem. By the way, the seal installation is backwards from what you would think it would be looking at it casually. Roger

Need to clarify my post:(i)symptons of my failed shift collars are always failure of pto to stay in gear (ii) shift collars never show much wear to my naked and untrained eyes. I'm guessing a new shift collar gives me enough new metal to get engagement.

I use my Cub with belly mower about 150 hours a year. Sometime the stuff I cut(say 10 hours of the 150) is heavy. I find I wear out a shift collar in about 3 years. Every time I think I will have to change the output shaft (many $ , labor and parts). Every time, however, a new shift collar remedies the problem. My Cub is 47 years old and I'm pretty sure the out put shaft has never been changed.

I think more than just the lever was worn out. Usually the shift collar and/or the shafts get worn too.

It's not that the lever isn't moving far enough. It is. It's that there isn't anything left to engage.

Thank you Nat for your response, I had every thing out of there when I installed the new lever and it all appeared to be ok with very little wear. The clutch is fairly simple it just slides on the PTO shaft to the power shaft with no other springs or plates. I just dont to wear the Pin on the lever out to soon by putting to much pressure on it. Thanks ED
