I have always heard that the 656 Diesels were an excellent tractor in almost every regard. Did the 686 use the same motor-rearend? Also did the 686 have the same shifting isuues as the rest of the '86 series?

Grandfather had a 656 brand new. Traded it in for a 666 new, decided the 656 was a better machine so traded the 666 off a year later on a 656. When 686 came along he bought a 686 new. Still have both, always used the 686 for plowing and planting because it pulled a little better, but used the 656 for EVERYTHING else. Said the 686 used oil and took more fuel from the day it was new.

Correct George, 666 and 686 are basically the same. When grandfather bought the 686 new he would have bought a 656 instead if IH would have built one brand new for him. Some of that was just old fashioned stuborness, he also kept one of his super C's 'till his dying day because it was "handy".

I personally preferred running the 686 over the 656, it was much tighter and peppier. Perhaps because grandfather put all the hours on the 656.

I think IH improved beefed up the rear end in the 686 vs 656. I had a 686 with the D312 - great tractor for it's time and extremely reliable.

I reciently drove around on a New Holland TL80A and noticed a lot of little things that were better on the 686. Location of controls, 3 point hitch adjustments, hydraulics were better on the 686. The TL 80's engine has much more low end torque (I think when they de-tuned/downsized the D312 it lost the low end torque of the D414) and greater number of gears 16 gears forward including the creeper vs 10 including the T/A on the 686. Both tractors are about the same PTO HP and size. The TL80A didn't have a powershift or T/A equivlant. Shuttle shift is mighty nice for loader work.

As far as which is a better tractor, it's mostly a question of which diesel engine is the best. All three used the same basic gas engine (263 in a 656, 291 in a 666 or 686), and those are all dogs if you ask me. 656 Diesel had the D-282, which was just a gas engine converted to run on diesel. The connecting rods are quite small, it only has four main bearings, and only has 14 head bolts. Don't get me wrong, they're a great engine for anything other than heavy tillage, great fuel economy, just not a true heavy-duty diesel design. 666 and most 686's had the D-312, which is a scaled-down version of the old reliable 414/436/466. Very well built and reliable. Late 686's have the German-built D-310, which is also an exellent engine, but they absolutly stink when idling around. I put many hours on a 310 powered 686, great tractor aside from the smoke/stink and the lack of power brakes. As far as shifting issues, they can have their problems, but are in no way like the bigger 86 series- that is a totally different transmission/shift linkage.

 stinky 310 in reply to K.B.-826, 03-13-2007 18:00:30
IH had higher compression pistons to cure the stinkies. It was not a recall but was available to original owners in Northern states if they complained about the smoking on cold starts. I did a couple but I'm sure there would have been many more if people would have know it was available.

Arf: The 656, 666 and 686 are all good tractors as long as you go diesel. I put 15,000 hours on a 656 and have driven both the others. Also had close friends that put a lot of hours on 666 and 686. I'd give the edge on brute force to the 666 with the American 312 diesel, but only a very slight edge. There are a couple of items, IH nickled and dimed as production went along, clutches and that damn steering cylinder on the later ones.

They are both good tractors, but I agree with other post the 666 and 686 are better in my opinion. They do have different engines that start much easier than the 656. The 656 uses glow plugs if they dont work the tractor is hard to start. The 656uses a D282 6 cylinder while the 666/686 used a D312 and later 686 used German built D310 engines. The 686 has a bigger hydraulic pump and start very well I have 666 that is as good all around tractor as I ever had.

The 686 is an updated version of the 656.

Transmission is the same basic design as the 656. There are probably some minor transmission improvements. Engine is the D312 instead of the old glow-plug start D282 diesel. Much better engine.
