For years, I have been putting official IH 'low ash' oil in the crank case as per IH's recomendation, but I can't help wondering if just a good grade of straight 30 weight - like I put in my Case 480 hoe - would do just as good and would save me a little money. Any comments? Thanks CP

For at almost twenty years, my father ran his Super C on cheap, non-detergent oil because that's what was recommended to him.

Before that the tractor belonged to his father and while I can't answer for what exact kind of oil Grandpa might have used, I guarantee it was the cheapest decent oil he could find, probably NOT the IH brand.

The original engine in that tractor lasted until 2000 when I finally had to have it rebuilt. Could it have lasted significantly longer if we had all used better oil? You tell me...

Yes, it could have and would have. I've been running diesel grade motor oils close to 40 years now. I have never rebuilt a tractor diesel under 10,000 hours, gas 4,000 hours. I use this oil in every engine I own, even my 4 cycle 1975 lawn mower. My cars, my trucks. I drove a 6.2 diesel well over 700,000 km, and anything that would give that kind of service out of one of those mickey mouse engines, must have been close to RIGHT. The only engine work on the 6.2 was glow plugs and timer, water pump, injectors and injection pump.

Clifford: You'll regret it, if I were you I'd be thinking of using the better grade oil in that Case hoe.

Any good qualtiy detergent oil will work. I use straight 30 wt in one tractor and 10w-30 in the other two. If you haven't been running detergent oil then be prepared as you switch. It might be a good idea to drop the oil pan and clean the sludge out and maybe even pull the valve cover gasket and clean/rinse the top end with the pan removed. The detergent oil will break loose a lot of old sludge that has been building up for 50+ years. Otherwise you may want to change the oil and filter more frequently until the motor is cleaned up.

dont foget to pull the valve cover, the return ports can get plugged too and starve the oil pump of oil as well.
