If the clutch is burning (smell) It is nor a good sign. Please answer the following: 1} With engine off. If the clutch is pushed in all the way, with the trans in 3rd gear, can the tractor be rolled along the ground with no unusual noise, or resistance? 2} With the trans in Neutral, can the clutch be let out without burning and smell? 3} With the trans in high gear, and the clutch out can the tractor be pushed forward without turning the engine, even if it is difficult to push? How to adjust the clutch: With the engine off, put your hand on the clutch pedal. Push in on the pedal until a change is felt in how much effort it takes to push farther, (kindof gets harder than mild spring pressure) measure the distance that the pedal traveled from the drivers platform to the pedal where it was touching the platform. It should be one inch, or one and an eighth inches. If it is near this adjustment, the clutch is toast, splitting is necessary. If it is off, then adjust it so the pedal feels like I noted above. Then try it. If it still won't move the clutch is toast. If you continue to get it hot enough to smoke, you will be buying a flywheel and a clutch pressure plate, and a disk. I guarantee it.
