Neb. Tractor Test #612 says:

CHP drawbar = 51.25 h.p.
CHP belt pully = 57.05 h.p.

According to Guy Fay's "International Harvester Tractor Data Book", the Neb. test for 450 gas is 51.25 (max) drawbar & 55.28 (max) PTO. He also says that there were 18,305 450's produced. Given that there were gassers, LPG's & diesels in this number, I'd say that is a pretty low production number for a three year production run of them. In comparison, there were 31,806 400's produced in a 3-year run. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

The actual production run was only about two years long or 24 months for both the 400 & 450. They started mid-year on both.

According to the book I have there was 38,360 400s and 25,565 450s built. A while back D Slater said the serial numbers on 400s went to over 40,000 so how many was there? Seems there is different info on this.

The only thing I'm claiming for a fact is some farmall 400 tractors have a 40,000 + serial #. What I'm stating now is from Guy Fay info and I could be interepting it wrong, but I think its close as anyone has. Farmall 400 built in 1954 and 55,total 24440 ,total in 56, 16517. Last # built a diesel # 41485. Farmall 450 built from nov. 1956 to april 58 and 17852 total in 56 and 57, total in 58, 7737. Under this year totals in data book he shows a lower total and says farmall totals on both 400 and 450. Maybe he can clear this up or someone show me that I,m not understanding right.

D slater see what I mean. Your total for 400 comes to 40,957 and you say the last one was 41485 the numbers start at 501 so that leaves 28 numbers unaccounted for(if my math is right)and on 450 your total is 25,589 and my chart say's 26,066 is the last one that is a difference of 23 after you subtract 500, were are the other tractors? This is confusing. I also looked at the chart on this site and it matches mine exactly except it doesn't show were they end at. I don't know.

Hold up,all I said was that some 400 tractors were over 40,000 + the rest is the way I understand Guy Fay listings. I know they don't add up and I don't think they have to, no one that I know of knows for sure they sold tractors with every serial # between start and end #.What I don't understand is in his data book for a F 400 he lists a total of 24,440 for 54 and 55 also 16,517 in 56. That comes to 40,957. then on the next line down it says 31,806 farmall 400 produced. Someone has listed they have F 400 41,418 gas, also F 400 LP 40,765 and F 400 D 40,720 in Red Power Mag. and I know were F 400 D 40,954 is.

Maybe we will never know exactly how many there were. It seems like someone would know. I wasn't insinuating that you said this or that I was just adding. Seems like Guy's book is conflicting as well. I dont understand why there would be several different list with different figures. As I said My list says the last 400is 38861 and the last 450 is 26066. If there are tractors with higher numbers my list is useless. Just trying to figure it out. One of them things that make you go hmmmmm.

Think Guy Fay ending number for 400 and 450 is the best we have to go on unless something new comes out of Wisconsin Historical records. I sure didn't want to claim I know the exact answer to totals or end # and that was the reason for my last response. But I do know for sure ending serial # you have for 400 is not any good. Used a few high 400 serial # as example and seen others.
