Howdy, Boys: I've got to buy some fronts for the ol' SH right away. Old fronts are 5.50-16's and rears (about 1-2 years left on the mis-matched rears) are 12.4's. Before I buy new fronts of the same size, what is a good combination for front and rears on this tractor? Are 13.6 rears a good choice - and compatible with 5.50 fronts? or, do I need 6:00 fronts if I go 13.6, or - do I need to stick with the 12.4's and 5.50's? This is a working SH (although a nice tractor) and will be used mostly for brush-hogging 25 acres, although it will also be used for discing a garden each year as well as (very rarely) ploughing. I use one Super A for finish mowing around the house and the other Super A I keep the cultivators on, so the SH is the "hoss" for the "big work" (almost a joke) around this little ol' 25 acre farm. Thanks. mike

Mike: I used 6.50x16 and 13.6x38 on my Farmall 300, granted as Bob has outlined one can not install them at narrowest setting. They will go on with wheel lugs outward and on outside of cast hub. The 6.50s increase the height very little, but they carry up much better on soft soil conditions. With 6.50s the front of tractor will look high unless one has 13.6 on the rear.

Bear in mind they do work better as long as front end carries up. If the front end bogs down in soil the big tires just make a bad situation worse. We had an unusual soil on the east coast, not a firm subsoil like most of the continent. Even as far back as 1950s we were looking for more rubber on the ground.

I agree, 550's on the fronts are easier to mount and will work fine. I have 13.6's on all of my super H's

I have 5.50 fronts and 13.6 rears on my Super H. The combination works fine for me.

My father in law put 6.00 fronts and 14.9 rears on his SH. Only difficulty was mounting the new 6.00 fronts in the narrowest NF configuration. The first tire goes on OK. But the second is a *&#^! to mount with it's mate already in place. Even with the first wheel loosened there's barely enough room to work the 2nd one over the wheel hub.

But the SH has excellent traction and treads lightly with slightly oversized rubber. And it looks kinda cool too!

For what you do--the original size which was usually no larger than 11(12.4)-38. I see no advantage in larger fronts, either. My 460, a Super H successor came with 13.6's and 6.00-16's. It is a much larger tractor. I plowed many acres in the 50's with an H with 11-38's on it. Loaded tires and single weights. Some slippage, but it was loaded to the gills as far as power. Get 6 ply tires, front and rear. Not to scare you off, but I just put new 13.6's and 6.00-16's on my 460. Took the rims to the Firestone dealer, they mounted them ($90). Just under $1200.

Hey I didn't even ask the question and I was helped. I have the same issue comming up on my super H.. It had 13.6's on the rear and mis-matched fronts. I didn't know what was appropriate and just hadn't gotten that far in the restoration yet.

Thanks, Gene
