Howdy Boys: Ran the super H Monday and learned that when I put it in a bit of a strain, the throttle (governor control) lever jumps out of its notch on the plate and the tractor drops to an idle. My machine has the square notches on the plate, not the saw tooth. The notches on the plate do not look worn. Come to think of it, maybe the lever is worn; I can't go look now, as the tractor is at the farm and I'm not. What are the usual causes of this? Is the square notch design inferior to the saw tooth design? As always, thanks in advance. mike

Check the part on the lever that fits into the notch. My Sup H was doing the same thing. CIH had them in stock...$1.79 I think. Works perfect now. No spring problems, just 50 years of use wore it down. I was going to grind down a bolt head to fix, but happened to be out near the dealership one day and stopped to ask. Went home happy! Mike

I would replace the whole unit before I would use one of those lousy looking friction throttles, effective or not. The saw tooth or square tooth is one of the distinguishing characteristics of the letter series. In my mind the friction tooth cheapens the looks of the tractor. I do not know if the square tooth was standard on the later tractors. I do know that the square tooth was the replacement in the late 50's. You can buy the parts (if needed) from OEM tractor parts.

Ah-ha! So, this is nothing new or unique to my particular tractor. I will try shimming the spring, or replacing it. If that does not work, I wil find myself an old M&W friction throttle. Thanks so much, guys. mike

I used to have that problem with my M and nothing I did completely cured it. The year Red Power was in Lebadon TN I bought a genuine M&W friction throttle there and my problem was cured. Ran M 2 or 3 hours today and was right proud of it started on first try after sitting since Octtober and performed near perfect all day.

I put a friction throttle on my H to solve that problem... on our SMTA we had we would vice-grip the throttle in place for stationary PTO work so it wouldn't jump down.

My recent addition (Dad's H) has the notches and slips down from time to time, plan to add some washers and/or a new spring...

As to the debate on notch vs. sawtooth: Both of my early 42 Hs had a sawtooth on it when I got them, and my Dad's late 42 has notched. Who knows what is correct as there were sixty some odd years between being manufactured and my acquiring them.

Wellcome to the club thats a problem that has been going on for yrs best replacement is the friction throttle but you mite want to add a washer or two to the spring. The square tooth replaced the saw-toothed original they were better but nothing works better than the friction one.

I would think if you put a heavy enough spring on it, it would hold no matter what kind of tooth it has.

check the spring under the throttle, it probably is worn out. i went to the hardware store, got one the same diameter and thickness, then cut to length. worked pretty good. i dunno, some of my tractors got saw tooth plates, some have the notched. hard to say what happened in their past lives.

Mike: I've never paid much attention to square tooth on SH, however if it is the same principle as used on 300, spring tension is as important as notches. If the spring tension is not great enough, ever the slightest round on teeth will cause it to slip. It will be worse at full throttle, and for that one I designed a device to lock it at full throttle.

Believe me, mankind does not have enough patience to deal with that.

Don't take this as gospel but I don't think I've ever seen a saw tooth on an H or M or their Super clones. They either have the square tooth or the M & W aftermarket friction throttle. The A's, C's etc's, have saw tooth. Hugh?????

Dave: Right on the little ones. However my 130 started slipping back on saw tooth notches. The notches looked good so I rebuilt the lever. I've been grinding and filing on that lever close to a year now, it still slips ocasionally. I think the saw tooth must have ever so slightly worn making it over 90 degrees. Oh, the annoying things we put up with on old iron.

Dave: Looking at this complete thread and everything said, I just wonder if one of those H-M friction throttle levers couldn't be adapted to our little tractors. Maybe there is another friction lever that would work, and look right. Just me thinking out loud.
