as far as teflon tape goes-- "do not use it on any fitting that has any gas or liquid running through it, that contains hydro-carbons--" this is from the makers of teflon tape,,the hydro carbon reacts with the teflon tape causing it to become brittle and start flaking off and does so until it causes a leak !!!

the only thing that you should use teflon tape on is drinking water connections. teflon is not a sealer it is a lubricant. it lets you tighten the fittings tighter. use rector seal like the other fellows said.

This probably does not apply to your situation as oil will avoid a rust problem. This being said, we have found out that older plumbing under ground, and in poorly vented hog confinment buildings that the teflon tape may be a good sealer, but old pipe dope lets you take it apart again someday. Teflon pipe dope was suggested for years on LP gas lines because it was said it never dries out. But then again if I find a can that has set with the lid open at a farm auction, it has dried out the whole can.

I'll vote with Cliff. Use Rectorseal No. 5. You can get it at Lowe's or Home Depot in the plumbing department or at most any hardware store that handles plumbing supplies. It's a Teflon emulsion and won't be affected by oil. Just make sure to get it only on the threads and not on the ends or inside the fittings. It comes in a tube, or also a can if you you want to spend more money. It's fairly expensive.

gene, I agree. I used it on ALL of my fittings when I redid the hoses. When I had to address the filter, there was one hair of tape, and I know it wasnt mine, because it was under ages of gunk. The trick is to start the tape in about 2 threads and CUT the end, so theres not slivers all over the place. And wrapping it the right way is important as well...
Ideally tapered threads pretty much seal, especially when new, but if you are plumbing lines and fixing a leak in the future would require major disassembly, like mine, I decided to go with some sort of sealant.

Anything but teflon tape. Had problems with some single action hyd cylinders on row markers once. Completely baffled until I found teflon tape in one of the orfices.

I would stay away from the teflon tape and use Gasoila "Softset". Most plumbing supply stores carry it. Just brush on a light coating on the male threads. Hal

Teflon tape works, just make sure you don't put it on the first two threads. That keeps it from getting into your system.

I use Rectorseal #5 on all our pipe threads. I think it's actually made for fertilizer and chemical fittings but it works great on fuel and hydraulic fittings as well.

Do not put teflon tape on your hydraulic fittings this has a tendency to come off and go through the system. You will be better off to use plumbers dope on them. It is available at most hardware stores and probably at TSC or plumbing supply house.
