Is it possible to plumb in the Lift-All Pump off of an M to work a two way acting cylinder. I do not have the extra money to purchase a hyd. valve right now and I would like to test some implements that I have. What would be the best way to do it so I could just try it. I am thinking a line from the pressure side of pump to the cyl. and the other line from cyl going into the fill tube on pump. to retract the cyl. I would have to switch the lines but at least I could try it to see if it works.

Below is a picture of the factory Auxiliary Control Valve for our 1940 Farmall M with a belly pump. It is a really simple little setup where the valve has a spool that moves up and down with the control rod. It allows true two way action from a system designed for one way implements.

Just out of curiosity, what are you trying to use it on? If you are just testing the rams and such on an implement where gravity will pull it down, take off the lower hose on the ram and replace it with a pipe plug with a small hole drilled in it. That way, the other side of the ram will just be filled with air that can move in and out. If the hydraulics are in good shape, it should be able to lift quite a bit. We lifted up our vibrashank with it and it had no trouble.

it is lifting a quack drag and in the future a loader. I don't think the drag has enough weight to dig into the ground I do have a Two way cyl. that I had laying round the house and I am trying to use that one. I will do it correctly with a valve bank eventually but short on cash and I want to try it out soon.

If there"s weight on the cylinder when it"s up, when you switch hoses, the implement will drop fast if there"s no way to control the flow of oil back to the resevoir.
Don"t get hurt.

one of my m's has an aftermarket two way set up. they mounted a two way open center valve behind the belt pulley. run the output line for the belly pump to the in side of the valve, run the out put line down to the belly pump drain plug. mine has a 90 degree street elbow screwed in to the drain plug to attach the line. the actuator rod for the belly pump has a 1-4 inch steel nub welded to it at the full on pump position so you can lock the belly pump on. they then ran a second rod from the handle on the two way valve up by the belly pump control rod so you can activate the two way valve from the seat. i'll get some pics this weekend and post em for you. kind of slick, not to expensive.

A log splitter control valve can be adapted for not too much money.

Yes that will work for a trial. If you watch e-bay the I-H conversion two-way valves show up for sale.

It depends on what the implements are, but many of them are gravity down, even if they do have a two way cylinder on them. If that is the case, just take the un-needed hose of the cylinder and put a breather in the port. Or even quicker put the hose in a bucket and be sure that it is tied down If you really need to power the cylinder the other way, switch hoses, but remember you will have a cylinder full of oil coming out of the detached hose, which can make a mess, and also has to be returned to the system.Your idea of putting the other hose to the fill port will also work.Another way to return a cylinder without power to it is to use a come-along, or high-lift jack as the return method. You also need to remember that the Lift-all is a fairly low pressure system, and some equipment may require higher pressures to move it.
