656 with TA. did an overhaul couple years ago and replaced the clutch too. had the free play adjusted right at the time. the amount of free play has now *increased* dramatically! i must not have put the throw out bearing on all the way, and it finally seated on its own. no other noises or strange happenings. now i gotta readjust it all for the TA. anyone else have this happen? should i look at anything other than the bearing for the cause?

I assume you are talking about the main clutch. If not, the same principles apply to the TA clutch.

Remove the bottom inspection cover and inspect the clucth pressure plate release levers and make sure they are not burned on the tips. The levers should all be equal distance from the release bearing. The levers should be close to parallel with the flywheel. Also reach up and feel the release bearing. Make sure that the balls have not fallen out of the bearing. Inspect the release fork to see that it is tight on the clutch shaft and has not moved. Check the weld on the outside of the clutch shaft arm to be sure that it has not broken and turned on the shaft.

If you find nothing wrong, then you are probably right that it just took this long to seat itself correctly.
