While trying to start my tractor at first it stuck and would not turn over and then turning over completely free. I pulled the starter out, and you could see the flywheel turnover when the fan was turned by hand, no matter what position the diesel/gas decompression lever was in. I pulled the valve cover. All assemblies and linkages seem intact. The cam that pushed the compression release valves in the centers of the head seem to be working. Any suggestions on what the issue with the compression could be? This just occurred, it ran fine when the last I learned it, please any help would be appreciated.

I can"t quite tell from you comments if you have no compression, or low compression. If you have low compression, I"d take another look at the compression release mechanism, if it"s working, check to see if the starting valves are stuck open (a common problem). The compression release cams push down on some caps (inverted cups) that sit on top of the starting valve stems. If any of the caps aren"t moving up and down as you work the compression release, those valves are stuck open, and will reduce your compression to the gas engine ratio of 6:1 or something like that.

With the cover off you should be able to see the valve train move as it is turned over. If it does not, that is the problem. Either a gear in the cam drive, or key way sheared, or broken cam. all are possible if a valve was stuck, and the lifter did not bend. A free turning engine also may have all the valves, or many, stuck open. See if there is massive play in the valve assembly if they do operate. Good luck, JimN
