Head gasket and other surprises

Last week I posted about taking an A to its (our) first show. Came home with lots to do on a tractor that was supposedly restored. First, head gasket was leaking oil so I pulled the head. I put a torque wrench on one of the nuts to check it and found that it was only about 25-30 ft/lbs so no wonder it leaked. When I got the head off I could still read where the gasket said "Sealer/retorque required"--no sealer either. What I did find was pop up pistons and new sleeves that all had the 'B' codes stamped on them--matched set. Also found new valves, springs etc. AND the offset rockers for valve rotation. At least now I know why it turned over so slow with the 6 volt starter. Second, I decided that since I would have the whole front off I would add a water pump. More to stabilize the running temp than any other reason. I found one at Ag Ind products for $70 that said A,B series and had the wide belt pully already on it. Cheap enough but won't work-center hub of pulley and shaft stick out too far for the fan to clear. I could take the pump down to a shop and have the extra cut off but I don't know if there would be enough 'meat' left to keep the pully from spinning on the shaft, it looks pressed on. So, where can I get one that will clear the fan, or do you think the cut off idea will work???

You can grind the shaft some and then just bend the fan blades a little in that area. There must be a difference in the rebuilders as sometimes the fan hits and others not. I use a small cresent wrench and bend the blades a little. Even replaced a water pump one time and found that out.

I think that you will find that the meaning of "Sealer/retorque required" is that there is a heat sensitive sealant already on the gasket, so when the engine is first warmed up, this melts to seal on the head and block. After the sealant has melted the head needs to be retorqued. This is very common on the metal sandwich type gaskets. If there is a coating on the gasket that looks like a coat of varnish, that is the sealant. This designed to seal an a clean metal surface. The addition of any other sealant will defeat its purpose.

Owen, Engine had run up to normal temp for 10-20 hours that I ran myself + whatever time it had before I got it and when I pulled the head the gasket was not stuck to either the head or the block anywhere--totally loose. I know what your are referring to but I think that in this case the writing was there to say it needed sealant and retorqe.

I've had the same problem. Solved it by making a little bend on the trailing edge of each fan blade until it just cleared the water pump pulley.

Instead of wasting your time checking how much torque it took to LOOSEN the head nuts; which AFAIK is pretty meaningless; why didn't you try RETORQUEING the nuts; instead????

Bob, I said I checked the torque, that did not mean that I checked to see how much torqe it took to loosen the nut, sorry but DUHH. Besides, I didn't believe the gasket would seal properly once it had started to leak that badly.

Roger why do you think you need the water pump> I have run these for years and have never had any problem what so ever out of the original design. I have over bore kits in my Cs and use them fairly heavy witout a problem. I don't know the solution to your problem, I was just curious as to your reasoning for this.

George, engines run better and longer if they are operated at a relativly constant temperature. In addition they perform at their best when the temperature is correct for the design clearances etc. The large temperature fluctuations on these engines makes for large mixture differences and that changes HP, and economy significantly. Besides all that, I just like to see the temp gauge come up to what my brain says is 'normal'.
