I pulled all of the injectors, and poured ATF and kerosene down the holes. Waited 2 days and turned the engine over with a crow bar on the flywheel. Broke loose right away. Put 2 new batteries in, changed the cables and spun her clean, rinsed it a couple of times with some clean diesel. I then cleaned the injectors and lines and reinstalled them with new seals. Changed the oil and tried to crank it over to bleed the lines. Cranked over enough and got fuel to bleed out of the lines. Problem is that there is a pretty bad squeeky noise (somehwere) and the the starter will not spin the engine fast engine to light her up. Smoke out the pipe as each cylinder tries to fire. I think that the starter may be bad. Any other ideas?
Thanks Redd Headd

Welp if people want to jump all over me for this go ahead. If it was my tractor and I was turning it over and it was starting to put smoke out the exhaust I'd hit it with a shot of ether and my money says it will fire up and run. There are some issues with ether and I would be remiss to not mention them. Try a few whiffs of ether into the air breather tube when the tractor has started putting smoke out..if it doesn't light it up then put the ether away, it will wash down the cylinder walls if you keep pouring it to the system.( will condense on the cylinder walls) You should not use ether and glow plugs together. It sounds to me like your tractor is offering to start. Old fuel will still run it, add some fresh,it may help , I believe you said in another post the tractor had set for a spell. I'm no diesel expert but everyone I have ever been around will start when you see smoke coming out the exhaust.

Great ideas fellas! It is a D310 and I was not aware of the starting mode. I did crank it a fair amount to clean it out but I did not notice if I had oil pressure or not. The squeek does actually sound like it is on the upper end. I am going to pull the starter tonight and get it checked out (just doesn't seem to have enough tourqe). Thanks!

Which engine do you have? Since you did not mention glow plugs I will assume that it is a D310 rather than a D282. The D310 has a start position on the fuel shut off cable to inject more fuel for starting. The cable should pull fairly easy about 3/4 of the way then get harder for the final shut off position. The start position is just where the cable gets harder to pull. With the engine running it should idle about 1500 - 1800 RPM in this position.

The squeak may be coming from the rings/pistons the sleeves. Diesel fuel is not the best lubricant. It could also be coming from the rocker arms. Did it get cranked over enough to get oil pressue all the way to the rocker arm shaft? Hopefully the squeak is coming from on of those two areas because it gets expensive in a hurry if it is in the bottom end.

If this tractor has a TA you are not going to be able to spin the engine over the correct way by pulling, it and spinning it backwards will not get you oil pressure you need.

When I'm working on something like this I like to leave the injector (or spark plugs) out until I've cranked it over enough to know the the oil has gotten all through the lubrication system. I also like to replace the oil pressure sender with a gauge so that I can see that there is oil pressure building up before putting it all back together.

If she is squeeken i would be ah looken . And ya can not pull start her if she has a T/A. Ya may have a scored liner or she may have the bottom end out .

That "squeeky" noise would concern me just a little.

'Spose we have an insert spinnin'? Maybe this is why the diesel was locked up to start with?

Dunno,

Allan

One thing you might try is to give it a pull with another tractor. Then listen for the noise and if its still there look more a lot more. Also that way you might be able to see if you get good oil preassure. Some times after you get one unlocked it takes a bit to get them to start up.

Morning, everyone.

Redd, please keep us posted. I"ve never been present at the ressurection of a Diesel before and I"m following these threads with interest.
