I have a 41 farmall h that doesn't run good idling but runs good under load. when idling it will run good then die down then run good and die back down like it is out of time or something but when i give it about three quarters throttle it will run great. I was wondering if anyone could help me with this? i did a compression test.. all cylinders were good, new plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor points. the carb has been rebuild as well. I originally thought it was the govenor so i tore it apart replaced the bearings and the spring. im not sure what else it could be???

You said it runs fine EXCEPT when idling, I assume that means no surging. That should mean the fuel delivery and main jets are OK. Check the governor to carb link when in idle position-the carb should be against the idle stop screw and not moving. If not go clear through the governor setup instructions and make sure that all the links are not sloppy. There is a surge damper on the governor but if too tight it will make the governor slow to react. If the carb is on the stop screw and it still surges then it is a fuel problem and the idle passage is blocked.

Had similar situation on my H. I rebuilt the carb, but instead of idling nicely, the rpms surged. It ran okay when the engine was under a load. I fiddled with the carb for a few weeks with no luck. So, I looked at the governor next. It was little tricky to figure out. I spent an afternoon on my H and re-adjusted the governor per the I&T shop manual.... Followed it to the letter. Make sure that throttle linkage is tight all the way to the governor. There was a lot of slop in it, but once that was fixed, that old H ran like a top!

I agree with R4tried The carb has two metering systems the Main jet and the idle jet. Id say the idle jet is clogged or out of adjustment.

Sorry about the carb info, did not know you rebuilt it. You should make sure the fuel tank, sediment bowl & fuel lines are clean though. Andy.

Hi,
I too think you have carburetor/or fuel problem. You should take apart, clean and install a carb kit. Clean carburetor with carb cleaner and use lots of compressed air. Be sure your float is adjusted properly also. Check the fuel filter in the carburetor and clean it. The filter is in the fuel inlet fitting on your carburetor. You should also remove all the fuel lines, clean them with carb cleaner and compressed air. Also check your sediment bowl and fuel tank, be sure they are clean. A good clean fuel system is very important. Also make sure your carburetor is adjusted, all the screws at the correct setting. If you don't know how to adjust them, I have a few H manuals here and could let you know. Hope this works out and good luck with your H. Andy.

sounds like a fuel/carb problem, best results will be to make sure all lines are flowing and jets in carb are open.

When you rebuilt the carb was the fuel passage that discharges above the throttle shaft open. Sounds like either the idle jet or something is plugged. It would do that also if it is running from the generator output.

I was wondering if this could be fuel related. I was having all kinds of problems with mine until I put an extension up into the fuel tank to keep junk from getting into fuel, cleaned out the bulb clean, put filter in line and cleaned filter at carb--and made sure fuel tank was properly vented through the cap. My run sometimes and sometimes irregular was cured.
