If you look close, are there two teeth marked on the camshaft gear, about 180* from the single mark ?

My manual says "Timing: Drive gear keyed to camshaft; one tooth of gear marked to mate between similar marked teeth on magneto gear and cam gear has two teeth marked to straddle similar marked tooth on crankshaft gear at the same time when the engine is on No, 1 TDC."

Close up, single marks. I looked all through my H manual and thicker Farmall manual and couldn't find where it said how these line up.

Here's the procedure from my manual. There looks to be 2 punch marks at 3 o'clock on the cam gear
in your earlier posting. Hal

No it dont look right, everybody and the shop manual says there should be a double punch mark on the cam gear to line up with the single punch mark on the crank gear, my tractor however only had one single punch mark on the cam gear but this is in the root between 2 teeth to line up with the single punch mark on the tip of the tooth on the crank gear, yours is showing the marks both on the tooth so they never line up properly. I checked mine with the rocker cover off so I could see the number 4 cylinder valves were on the rock when these 2 punch marks were alighned on number 1 cylinder T.D.C. mark. I then timed the mag still with the the timing cover off at number 1 cylinder T.D.C. as there was no marks on the mag drive gear.

Doesn't look right. How does the other mark on the cam gear line up?

Hard to see, but both are the single marks, the cam mark is "left" of the crank gear mark.

Look at the mark on the opposite side of the cam gear. Will it line up better? or will it be off to one side too? Are the cam lobes for # 1 or #4 in the firing position?

When the engine is on #1 TDC, The cam gear has two teeth marked to straddle a simular marked tooth on the crank gear. The mag gear has two teeth marked to straddle one marked tooth on the cam gear. All gears have to be in the correct position for all the marks to line up. Start out with the crank on #1 TDC and find the marked tooth on the crank gear. It should be facing the camshaft gear. Then find the double marks on the cam gear. You may need to do some cleaning to find the marks. They were fairly faint on both of my Hs. If you get these in the correct position, the two marked teeth on the mag gear should straddle a single marked tooth on the cam gear. Sounds confusing, but when you get them right it will be clear. ken
