Head Gasket

A neighbors Farmal C had a blown out head gasket. He replaced the gasket and now it is leaking some oil and water between the head and block. He retorqued the head to 65 lbs after running for a while, but still leaks. I looked at it this morning and thought it was getting hot after just 3-5 minutes of running. The radiator was not boiling over but most of the farmalls I have observed are slow to get warm. This tractor already had a little steam coming out when I removed the cap. My thinking is the tractor got too hot and the head is now warped and not sealing water and oil as it should. Is this right?

Got a Super C that had the same problem. Kept blowing at the head gasket. Finally checked, warped head. Still ran strong though. Now in the middle of a complete overhaul. Check the head and block for warp. Mine blew between 2/3 cyl, but kept compression. Mike

The accidental use of a gasket for a waterpump equipped engine will provide some cooling limitations. Did the head get checked for cracks.
Were the rims of the sleeves standing up too high.
All these could contribute, JimN

A couple things come to mind, in no particular order.
Does it have a water pump or is it thermosyphon cooling?
If it is thermosyphon, was the radiator full? Did he pre-mix the water and antifreeze?
Did anybody flush out the block's water passeges? There are some very small openings that can get blocked very easily with rust and/or scale.
Did anybody flush the radiator? It could be full of rust and/or scale.
It is possible that the head is warped, but it wouldn't be high on my list of suspects. Did anybody put a machinists straight edge on it while it was off?
Did you know that the later service manuals call for 80 ft/lbs on the head bolts? I understand it is because modern gaskets need more torque.
Did he use sealer on the head gasket like most gasket makers call for?

Just a few thoughts
