Update on my '52 'H' project: Last night I got a lot done. Rebuilt and reinstalled distributor, installed new carburetor, new seat spring, installed new ring gear, and pilot bearing on flywheel and installed to tractor. Installed new clutch plate and pressure plate as well as new throw out bearing (Did use alignment tool). Slapped 'er back together and lo and behold no clutch, whatsoever. I can depress the clutch pedal with my pinky. Decided to split the tractor again (Gettin' pretty good at it). Upon splitting the tractor I noted that the fingers on the new pressure plate appear to be flat, whereas the fingers on the old pressure plate, appear to be at an angle towards the rear of the tractor. I'm wondering if I screwed something up with the fingers or the 6 bolts that hold the unit to the flywheel? It seems like the throwout bearing is making little to no contact with the fingers upon depression of the clutch pedal. Any thoughts, ideas, or advise? Are the 6 bolts supposed to be torqued to a certain level? I sure would appreciate the help as I am so close to finishing this sucker and getting it running (I hope) Thanks, Josh

Going to take the clutch apart tomorrow and see what I find. I appreciate all of the help.

Gene Bender may be on to the problem. If the hub is pointing toward the engine the disk holds the pressure plate away from the flywheel so far that the fingers move way far in (away from the T.O. bearing) If the clutch pedal is adjusted in this condition it will not push in much past half way, the disk will be torn up, and the tractor will not shift or go in gear. Are you sure you didnt put the clutch plate in backwards. The flush side goes next to the flywheel as the splined hub is offset. Did you replace the pilot bearing in the crankshaft?

Josh, you don't need to split an H to install a new clutch, it can all be done from the bottom. The clutch is bolted together to keep it in place during installation, you then remove those holding bolts when you have it bolted into place. The fingers should all be adjusted to the same distance, usually given at 3/16ths of an inch and then jamned nutted

Michael,

I am a novice here and not sure I understand your suggestion. What needs to be set at 3/16th of an inch? Thanks,

Josh

Most new pressure plates have bolts that keep them compressed for installation, did you take them out.

Yes, I took them out. BTW, I had to split the tractor to replace the ring gear. I removed the 3 nuts from the inside rim of the pressure plate and installed them with the other '3' on the outer edge of the pressure plate to hold it to the flywheel. There appears to be no way to adjust the fingers so that they open out towards the rear of the tractor. When I tighten the nut, the fingers depress, towards to engine. I should note that the old clutch was running fine, but since I had her split, I decided to replace it while I was in there. I just don't understand the difference in the angle of the fingers on the old and new pressure plates.

As your clutch wears the fingers will move at more of an angle to the rear of the tractor. Thats why you have to adjust the clutch linkage from time to time to get more petal free travel. With a new clutch you will have to lenthen the clutch rod between the petal and clutch arm to take up the space you no longer need with the new clutch. To make it simple if you have not already done so adjust the clutch linkage rod so you have about 1 inch of petal free travel.
