what special tools are required to install a rear pto seal on a 756 farmall. can the seal be installed from the outside and what are the dangers of pulling the seal housing off, it looked spring loaded when i loosened the bolts.

1000 shaft no problem from outside...540 shaft there is a aftermarket screw in seal from Hy Capacity that threads in on existing threads in PTO where the original tube cover was installed when unit was new. This is the answer up to the 86 series but will not work on 88 series units. Seal sells for about thirty bucks.

Ya need a special spring compressor or a shop press and a special tool to compress the BIG spring inside and then ya can remove the clutch drum then ya can take it apart , Now the PTO brake is also spring loaded on the rear housing and can safely be removed with a couple longer bolts till the pressure is off then you are at the seal , now having the special tool for seal instulation is nice to have but you can get by with a deep well socket that fits the seal . Make sure that you drive it in correctly and put the oil slinger back in . Get a book and read the section on the PTO . Also when removing the PTO from the tractor it is best done with a cherrypicker and the top 3 pt. plate removed so you can see then as you come out you must tip the rear of the unit down so as not to bang bump the pickup tube as it can be damaged real easy.

The seal is installed from the inside if you want the factory replacement seal.

Not sure on the 756 but they make a seal that you can install from the outside for the larger tractors.

The old one remains and the new is added on the outside.

540 RPM shaft seal is installed from the front. 1000 RPM can be replaced from the outside.

If the 756 has the original 540 PTO shaft the shaft id to short for the aftermarket seal.
