I bought a 450 diesel from an estate about 3 months ago that had sit for 14 years. The boy's that inherited the tractor tried for 3 days to start it with no luck. I bought the old tractor fairly cheap brought it home and started cleaning fuel tanks and fuel system along with the carb. I added fresh gas and with a little pull she came right to life. I then proceeded by the book and bled the fuel system and low and behold it switched and ran fine on diesel also. The trouble was the hydraulic pump never even grunted. I bought another one to put on it and guess what. I started the tractor 3 or 4 days ago and heard a little noise from the pump. I reached up and turned the wheel and the factory power steering worked perfectly. Now the fast hitch, steering, outlets and all work fine. Do you guys think maybe it was a stuck valve or something? I am just glad everything is working. I have put the 4 row fast hitch planter on this and am going to run it, seems like it gets better all the time. Also there was no hydraulic oil at all in the tractor when I got it maybe everything was all dried up.

You can buy some very nice JD7000 4RW planters nowadays for about 1000 dollars, as all the big boys have long since sold them. They are perfect for acreage and food plots. They are towed, with the right cups you can do corn beans, sorgham, sunflowers, and you get automatic hydraulic markers. And you can fertilize in the same pass. One thing JD did right. With the correct springs and furrow openers (Kinze) you can even no till, or min till.

I can do all that with this. I don't raise food plots. I do have a pull type planter, I will run them both when we get started. I also have no till coulters for both planters. I think I will stick with what I have. They are paid for and work very well.

Run her awhile and get her warm...then change that HYD fluid. Run it a few more days and do it again since it sat so long. May as well change all the fluids a few times to get the gunk out...course you know that.
Just make sure you don't shut her down hot...let her idle and cool before shutting down.
Did exactly the same thing with the old 450D dad had in the barn that was not used for years.
First chance you get hook a 10' disk on it and run it in the ground to the axles...she will love you for it.

Bill, I plan to do just that. Since this is a one man outfit, I will use it as much as possible. I am putting the Bushhog on it today and work those remotes some. I like it better every day. That power steering will ruin a feller.

George,

You give yourself far too little credit. Look at everything you did to the tractor, cleaning out the fuel system, tuning up the ignition, etc..

That's probably stuff the previous owners never even considered doing. They just hooked on the tractor and dragged it around hoping it would start.

No voodoo here, just good old fashioned simple maintenance...

Nat, I don't think those boy's knew it started on gas. I ask if they put gas in it and was told it was a diesel not gas. It turned over and didn't show any sign of busted block, so when they priced it I bought it. It needs a bunch of stuff such as gauges,a little body work,tires,rims and some oil leaks. I have a parts tractor with fair tires and rims, so it is just a matter of getting time and room to get at it. I have two other tractors tore down now so this one will work like it is this year.

I've ran into that same story so many times.

The worst darned thing you can do is "park" a tractor. They just go to haties in a handbasket in a hurry.

I agree with you, Allan, the most troubles for me come in the first couple of days of operation after getting the H out from a long winter's nap.

Simple maintenance is the reason many of these tractors ended up parked... my H was parked due to low oil pressure and knocking. When I took it apart the crankshaft was stamped .010" under and the bearings were standard! Some idiot did the last overhaul... :o(

Jim, It does seem sometimes the more you run something the better it gets. The old tractor is getting stronger all the time. Even got black smoke rolling out of her now. I am glad though, I had given thoght to parting it out, but I think it will have to stay and keep the 350D company wouldn't want it to get lonely.
