The hydraulic pump squeals after a few minutes from startup, air gets in the system and steering goes out. I have checked the flow divider valve, pilot valve, filter. Everything looks fine there. How do I go about checking the Hydraulic pumps? There are two bolts on the side housing. It appears you can put a guage there to check pumps pressure.(Aux/PS and Hitch pump. I have a guage but need to know what the operating pressureshould be or can someone point me in another direction. The rear hitch drops very fast so it could be a problem in the check valve. The pumps are immersed in the hydraulic fluid so I don"t know where the air could be getting in. Someone please point me in the right direction. Thanks, I am going crazy.

Tom, It could be sucking air at the intake pipe. Mine and many more old tractors develop this. Try adding a couple gallons extra Hy Tran and see if it clears up. I run my 666 over full all the time for this reason.

Thanks, A mechanic told me to check to see if I had the 544 with the modified pick up pipe. The older models had a pick up tube that was above the fluid line and was connected by a rubber hose. Mine has the newer pick up tube which is turned down and submerged at the bottom of the resevoir. I don"t think that is my problem but thanks for the response. Still going crazy!

If you are getting air into the system,and that is what it sounds like, there are only a couple of possible places where it can come from.

The air must be entering the system on the suction side of the pump. If the fluid level is correct and the filter is OK, then there has to be leak somewhere or oil is not returning fast enough to replenish the area of the pickup tube. Adding additional oil is a good way to check this.

Another possibility is foaming of the oil. When the pump pressure starts to fail, look at the dipstick to see if the oil is full of foamy bubbles. This can be caused by oil returning at the upper part of the reservoir instead of below the oil level. I do not know where the return is on a 544.

Fast dropping of the hitch can occur if the hydraulic oil is full of bubbles. I would get the other problem fixed first and then see if this is still a problem.
