IH 574 gas bucks and snorts under a load

Hello,
I have an IH 574 gas. Last fall it started hesitating, bucking, and backfiring when a load was applied and more power was needed. When I choked it, it was better. Eventually, even choking wouldn't help. We rebuilt and cleaned the carburetor, and cleared a fuel line from the tank, which was restricted, and replaced the fuel filter (there is a screen on the sediment bowl and spliced-in fuel filter after the fuel pump but before the carb). It runs better, but still needs some choke or bucking and snorting ensues. We also noticed the outside of the carb icing up this morning (it was humid and cool, not sure if this is related or not).

Any comments on where to go next? I really need this thing working, spring is here and all.

THANKS in advance for any help.

Paul

Our 674 gas had similar issues. The intake gasket was leaking.

Hello TWL,

Is there a test to see if the intake gasket is leaking? We tried spraying starting fluid, and applying(unlit) propane from a torch to the gasket with enging running to see if it smoothed out engine. We didn't detect a difference. Any tricks to replacing intake gasket?

Thanks,

Paul

Paul, the gas tanks get a lot of junk in the bottoms, if you take the guage out, look down in it with a flashlight, you'll be able to see. It sounds like it's starving for gas for sure. I took the tank off mine last fall and cleaned it out, made a big difference. Didn't have time then, but this summer i'm going to seal the tank, it's got rust spots starting from condensation. Bought it new in '75. There's also a screen in the fitting where the line attaches to the carb. The icing is normal, lots of them do it.

Hi Booch,
It sure sounds like not enough gas to meet the load requirement. Now what might give the restriction. The first thing I would do is take out the in line fuel filter unless you have watched gas pouring out of the line ahead of the carb when cranking the engine to work the fuel pump. The in line gas filter is ok but I dont favor them. Next you need to be sure that you have adjusted the load nozzle needle open to create a richer mixture. Then you should even be able to make the adjustment so rich that it will smoke black. If you cant set that carb real rich(Black Smoke) then you still have main load circuit obstructed. Now remember that the load needle adjustment only affects the engine when throttle is open half way or more. Next test at all spark plug wire ends for at least 1/2 in of nice blue spark. If it is much less then you need to do distributor work till ya get 1/2 in spark. Now from what you said you are choking quite a bit I bet spark plugs are all full of black SOOT. Take them out lay them on a fire brick or something to take the heat and get a small propane torch and pointy flame to burn carbon off do not over heat the adjusting prong but you should get the center electrode light cherry red. Put em back in and fire it up Ray

Just to let you know, not all 574's have a main jet adjustment screw. The dealer replacement fuel cutoff solenoids have no provision for one. That would be an additional test. Have someone hold the fuel shutoff solenoid against the engine block and then turn the key on. With the side properly grounded, the little needle should shoot right back into the solenoid. When the key is turned off, it should shoot out and stay there. If it doesn't do exactly that, it is shot. Also try running a piece of wire, like a bent coat hanger up through the outlet at the bottom of the tank. If it is slightly plugged there, that will break up the chunk

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Marvscheb,

We have a clear fuel line now, we put a guage on teh pump and it does about 5 psi preassure on the fuel, and gas pours out of the line. Someeone took out the screen filter to the carb on this tractor a long time ago, so the inline filter is necesary.

We replaced all the plugs, and intend to give a complete tuneup (cap, rotor, wires, pts, condensor)and will check spark as you suggest.

We'll try to make it smoke under half throttle-we haven't tried that. So that would mean turning the needle out (loosening) several turns?

Thanks again,
Paul

I have a 756 that acted similar to your 574. I replaced the fuel cutoff solenoid on the carb and no more problem. I had to choke it to keep it running, then after a while ever that wouldn"t keep it running.
