Hi: I recently had purchased a farmall 300 that had been setting in a barn for several years. It was bought out of an estate and I have no history on it. The tractor appears not to have very many hours on it, its really good shape. the motor was not locked up and turned freely. When I got it home, It took several things to get it going [rebuilding carburetor, cleaning gas tank and lines, plugs, points, dist cap, plug wires, battery, oil & filter etc.] when I finally got it started, it ran pretty decent for a while, but the more I ran it, [about 5 min.] there was noise [clattering] starting to develop from the valve cover area. I removed the valve cover and every thing looked normal except it looked like one push rod had been replaced by someone before me. there was a small pin hole that had rusted in the oil pan so I took the pan off to repair and found 1/2 if a lifter in the bottom of the oil pan.

Has anyone had this happen and what causes a lifter to split in 1/2 ???? Should I run it or try to fix before it blows up? The noise will quiet down some what the faster you run the engine. Any ideas????? Thanks farmallkid

Since nobody else has told you yet, you need to fix that. I suspect it will cause more problems if you try to run it this way.

Does anybody have any idea what might be at wrong? The tractor carries very good oil pressure. and for the most part runs very good, short of the lifter noise. I don't know what to fix! The valves are adjusted properly and the noise seems to be in all the lifters not just the one that was replaced. And I don't believe its an oil pump/pressure related issue.

First it sounds to me like you have a broken lifter that needs replacing. I would recommend if you don't have one you need a good service manual. The engine will have to have the cam removed to replace the lifters. The manual will walk you through this whole process. They are available here or TSC or Case IH. It is money well spent.
