I`m looking for info from anyone who`s had trouble with a 5288 popping out of 3rd& 4th gear. I`ve replaced the complete syncro for 1st ,2nd ,3rd &4th , checked shift cam throw and shaft end play. I`ve got the transmission apart for the 3rd time and need more ideas.I have`nt found anyone yet who`s had this problem. Any input wold be apreciated.

I have a 5288 I bought new in 1982. I am not an expert on transmissions but have had this problem a couple of times. Shifting between 3rd and 4th is done with the aid of solinoids. When I had trouble it was a solinoid problem.

Thanks for the reply Hydro. The trouble I`m having is It pops out of both 3rd & 4th the powershift works fine. This feels like it`s shifting into gear but when you let the clutch out it will try to pull itself , then stop and just grind.

I've never heard of that one before. Has your tranny been updated, if not is the gear loose on the splined shaft, letting it walk around. When you have it apart can you forcable make it come out of gear with a pry bar?

Thanks for the reply, The gears are locked on the shaft with snaprings and thrust washers ,these are all tight with a few thousand of clearance for rotation. The syncro blocker carrier was replaced and also is tight. The syncro carrier drums that couple the gear to the blocker also was replaced. It all feels good when I snap it into gear both in the tractor( through the shift cover ) and on the bench, but with power applied it pops out.I also studied the shift fork thinking it may be bent, but it`s pretty heavy cast and does`nt appear to be.
