I have an IH 300U I have adjusted the clutch per the IT book but occasionaly (especially going up hill) something will start slipping and whirring. I have the TA transmission and putting it in TA stops the problem, any Ideas?

I'll try to re adjust the clutch, how can I tell if it is the engine clutch or the TA clutches

If it is the engine clutch you should have the same problem whether the TA lever is ahead or back.

If it is the TA clutch, the problem/slipping will go away when you pull the lever back.

Sounds to me like the TA clutch is bad - when you get under a load the TA clutch starts slipping and it goes to low range.

First thing I would do is make sure the TA and clutch linkage is adjusted PERFECTLY by the book!

After that to check for sure I would do the following: Drive in 5th gear with TA lever ahead (direct) until you hear/feel the slipping. Pull the TA lever back and keep going, if there is no more slipping/noise try stepping on the brakes a little bit. If you can't make anything slip with the TA in low range (pulled back) then it must be the TA clutch that is bad.
