Maybe because it is cold is why it wont fire. I put 4 new plugs in it and a rebuilt carb. It fired a couple times but wont run. It floods the plugs even with the gas valve off. It spit and sputters al ittle but wont take off. It ran when drove into the shed beautiful. Any ideas. The cam is rolling, the valves are good. Lots of compression. It doesent have spark on the middle plugs. It does have good spark on the outer two plugs. Should do something more shpuldnt it?

C'mon guys, don't confuse him with all that 1-3-4-2 stuff. He was having trouble enough knowing whether it is 1-2 or 2-1.

I had the same problem with my BN. Hard to start. I talked with a repairman and he stated it sounds like I had to cold of plugs in it. Put in lot hotter plug and now it starts perfect. Just a suggestion. I would rather have a double dose of the crabs than own a green tractor. A green tractor is a Farmall wanta be.

If you have a 6 volt system that could be your problem. For the hack of it try hooking jumper cables up to a 12 volt battery then hook the negative to a good ground and touch the positive to the lead on the starter. That should wurl it right over and fire it up.

I have read your note. Don't get your underwear in a knot. The problem presented is simple, have patience. You most likely have one of two problems...wires crossed or a bad distributor cap. The firing order is stamped on the engine on the side just behind or to the rear of the generator. Trace your wires and make sure they are hooked up in proper order starting with #1...which is up front #4 is in rear. Take the distributor cap off and tap the starter and note the direction of rotation of the rotor button. Then check your wires beginnign with #1 in the same direction as the rotor rotates. The second wire should go to cylinder #3, the third to #4 and the 4th to #2.

If the wires are correct, take the distributor cap off and check it closely for cracks and moisture--even fire ants...Make sure the contacts and the rotor are not burned up. If you see problems, replace the rotor and cap.

Lastly, if all of the above checks out, I would then consider fowled plugs and bad plug wires.

If you go through all this and get it correct, It will run.

Maybe you should have bought a bicycle. I really don't think any make 1940s-50s tractor will be all that much different, especially the Deere if you happen to get a couple of plug wires crossed.

Naw, I think even a bicycle would have a few too many moving parts for this guy.

Check the inside of the distributor cap first. Look for a hairline crack or a carbon track in the area closest to the towers that feed the wires going to the two plugs that won't fire. If you've had a sudden cold spell after warm humid weather, the cap may have moisture on or in it. If the plug wire caps are old, even moisture and dirt on the outside of the cap can spell trouble. Moisture on the outside of spark plugs that have a little dirt on them can sometimes cause them to flash-over on the outside and not fire.

Double-check the plugs. Swap the two that won't fire with the two that will.

If anything looks suspicious in that distributor, replace the cap, rotor, points, and condensor.

If it's running on two now, it's still running on as many as the green ones its age!

Michael, you might want to verify a serial number or something first, could be yours is the first one off the line, and could easily be worth $150,000.

Theres not an engine made that will run unless you do the right stuff to them when they need it. You say it fires on 2 cylinder but not the other 2, well that means you need to do the TLC not complain that it doesn't run. Sounds like you have a bad cap and or rotor, a full tune up will go a long ways and even if its green you would still have to do the same stuff to them to keep one running as it should

You're welcome to drop it off at my place anytime.
Once it is running it will be about as reliable and good working tractor as was ever built. I can always use another.

Start with a good tune-up. Points, condensor, cap, rotor, wires, and new spark plugs. Won't cost all that much and will eliminate a lot of loop-holes that can cause problems.

You know, with a subject line like that, one could be perhaps forgiven for suspecting your trolling motor is out :)

(1) Check the firing order. 1342.

(2) Check the distributor cap.
