What is the best way to change the the front crank seal on my 1940 M. Some people have said to take the front bolster out in order to get the pulley off. The other option I've heard is to unbolt the frame rails at the bellhousing and roll it out. It's not leaking bad but I want an idea before I dig into it.

Before tearing into replacing the front seal, make sure the crankcase ventilation system is working properly. Originally the front seal was installed with the lip facing forward to keep dirt from being drawn into the engine. Unless things are really worn out, the front seal will not leak if the venting is working .

If the damper pulley hub is grooved from the old seal speedi-sleeves are available from NAPA or from your Case/IH dealer. Hal
PS: Very easy to install

farmer bob has the ticket, after you get the pulley off check the seal surface for a groove cut in from the old seal, if its got one, you can put a speedy sleeve on it to give you a new wear surface. motion industries (berry bearing) can get them for you.

Rolling the front end and engine away from the clutch housing will do nothing for you except make extra work. Remove the grill, lower steering shaft, radiator, and upper steering bolster. Some prefer to also separate the lower bolster from the upper to substract the extra weight. Once the upper bolster is off you will have proper access to get that crank pulley off and any other parts so you can remove the engine timing cover where the seal is located. It would help if you had at least a service manual and even better if you had a parts manual to follow through the process. Remember to jack and block the tractor safely and don't leave the tractor supported on a jack while working on it. Safety First, Last and Always!
