What kind of paint or other coating is recommended to paint the rims with? Normally I see them painted some kind of silver or grey, but what kind and color silver or grey? What brand seems to work best and is most durable?

Rust-O-Leum also has a 'hammered' look version of the aluminum paintthat just sprays on and looks exactly like galvanizing. ( I think, anyway). I did inside and out.

What about the actual Rustoleum cold galvanizing compound?

Rusty Farmall has the right plan. I brush all my rims and they turn out great. I ask local IH shop years ago about the paint for rims and that is how they done it.

Does it come out clean or can you see brush marks?

We have painted rims on 3 tractors now, and i'm not happy with them,We tried the aluminum rattle cans from the hardware store on 2 tractors, it rubs off, the case silver will go blackish, and the aluminum wipes off, we mixed the 2 cause when mixed it dosn't go black, but still wiped off a little, So the next one we do, i will get automotive paint, and put hardener in it, then it wont come off.

Get a quart can of Rust-Oleum aluminum and a good soft brush and have at it. That is how it was done back in the fifties at the dealer who was doing the IH sponsored up-grades. If it was good enough for IH, it's good enough for me.

Brand is not important, the type of paint is. Acrylic urethane over epoxy primer is the most durable, rims or elsewhere. You must use hardener with it, which requires supplied air to avoid breathing the isocyanates in the hardener. I use PPG 8568, but that is only my opinion. The rims were originally galvanized so there is no official paint code.

Please help me out here...and I will learn something new today...Apply it with "supplied" air?

Do you mean to the face mask?

Yes. Cartridge masks will not filter out isocyanates, unless the cartridges are brand new and the mask fits perfectly, not likely. Consists of an intake blower or turbine set out of the fumes, a hose, and a mask or hood.

I think I want this system. Can you make a recommendation as to a manufacturer that you find that works good? I do a lot of spraying and I think this would work best for me.

This has been discussed about 10 times in the past 6 months. Please check the archives. IHC Argent Silver enamel with hardener works pretty well. But I spent over 25 hours and 50 dollars in materials prepping mine for paint.
