I found an H. And it's pretty close, and the owner says it should be in running shape. My pickle is that it's a '51. I kind of had my heart set on a '42-'45... a war tractor, and dual fuel. This one is an X1. What makes it even more difficult is that the owner lost a son in Iraq, so he'd like to see it go to a military guy like me. First question he asked me is if I planned on restoring it. He wants it restored, and he would like to see pictures of the progress. Of course I can do both. For that he said he can give me a really good price. ($500-$600) It would need a dual narrow front end, and a belt pulley, and I'm not sure what else yet. But it sounds like a great deal... which puts me in a pickle, because it's not a war tractor.
So, maybe I should just get over that, accept that it's a '51, and jump on the opportunity? What do you all think?

hmmmmm

To RONEE, in case you read this, Rick, from CaliforniaTractors.com set me up with this guy and waived his fee for the deal because I'm active duty military. He remembers me from when I called him back in July. He used to live in Central CA, but then moved to OR. He's a nice guy who's gone out of his way to help me. I don't know what your dealing with him was to make you warn me away from him as a bad person, but he doesn't seem like a guy that needs to be avoided. Just thought you should know that.

Man, do I type alot?

Mike, It's right in the middle of the Korean "police action" 1950-1954 .
First "war" we didn't win, and still haven't. If we had finished the g--ks off then, we wouldn't be having problems with nukes in there now.

Gene

Buy the tractor!!!!

It does sound like a good deal, Mike, and the close location is a great benefit, considering the expense of transporting heavy machinery. With respect to the other vets, however, I would really try to discount the "lost son in Iraq." It"s a business deal, you want to go there with a clear head and a list of items to check, rather than getting sucked into the sentiment of the deal while driving up there. I know that I would be lousy at following my own advice, but given Ronee"s caution that this guy has a history, you can"t be too careful. Whatever happens, I hope you come away feeling that you did the best thing for yourself, I know you"ve put a lot of effort into this.

Friend,
You will find that the impact of this Korean War era machine on your life, when it is in your garage, will be far richer than the creative process you have been going through to get one home. Buy this tractor, it is a fine specimin.
Getting your first selfowned tractor is like choosing a wife. The hunt is exciting, the homelife is compromise and work. The end is happiness. go willingly to the wedding. JimN

I would keep the single tire on it. There was a war going on in 1951 too. My brother was in the Air force, I was drafted and my two brother-in-laws were recalled to active duty. Hal

that looks like a good tractor and you had someone that would trade you the row crop for it looks like it needs minor work such as the grill with a couple of umm watchyamagigers bent ( haha forgot the name) but it looks like an overall good tractor but where is the battery dosent it go on the left side under the gas tank?

Wouldn't shipping make the whole deal not worth the expense? If you seriously want it, then of course I'll send it your way.

Mike,

If it were me, I would not hesitate to buy that tractor at all.

In running condition, and for that price it may be the one for you to really consider getting.

I know that you may have your heart set on a war tractor, but this seems like a super deal plus you said that it is close to you.

If you are really set on a narrow front end you may be able to swap the single for one.

I know a couple of guys around here that would trade a narrow front for a single one in a heartbeat. They are very sledom seen in our area.

As far as the belt pulley goes, you can put the word out here that you are in need of one, or keep a ckeck on eBay they are listed there often.

We always ran the steel belt pulleys on all of our H's, M's, and SMTA. I was about 25 years old before I ever saw a fiber belt pulley for the first time, until then I never knew that there was any other type offered by IH.

I have a complete narrow front in the shop that you could have, BUT I live in MD and with you being in CA the shippping cost would be more than it is worth.

Good Luck

Out of respect for this gentleman and his Hero son I would buy It and still keep looking for the 42. For that price you will never go wrong.

I only have room for one tractor. So if I commit to this, then that's it.

Not a pickle, a juicy strawberry!
You have a chance to get a great tractor, at a great price, probably make a life long friend, complete a dream for someone. If I could do anything for the fathers of friends I lost, I would jump at the chance. What's to ask?

That is a really good deal for a later model H in running condition! Any pictures of it?

Personally, I would "settle" for this one. The high-compression gasoline engine will have more power (smaller combustion chamber in the head).

Of course the decision is yours, but my opinion is to jump on it quick!

It's just going to be a parade and show piece, so the actual strength between a few horsepower won't mean much to me.

Here is the pic on the website. I'll get a lot more once I go see it in person.

I like it Mike! That sucker does indeed look nice.

Just remember that you can fix this one up and when you find your WW2 era tractor you can sell this or do a trade with cash and have the tractor and some money to start the restoration of the WW2 one off with. You'll find your WW2 one bro, just keep looking but don't let this one pass you by!!!!!
