Ok. I have this old farmall A that hasn't run in years. it is a wide front end model with a mag. The part that confuses me is that it has a battery and altenator/generator on it. Why would these be needed if it has a mag? Could it possibly be converted over?

Some older Buicks had the starter button hidden under the gas pedal. When you floored the gas pedal it would crank. Real surprise. Think 1955.

When you push the button and nothing happens you use the crank. Unless you did,nt realy want to do any work anyway.

Most of the time you wouldn't - but what if the battery is low? Or the starter goes out? In cases like that, the crank comes in handy.

I have many a time. A farmall in good order will fire right off usually with one pull of the crank. Your tractor needs to be in proper time or it can kick back and make for sore arms or worse. I have a Super C that I start quite often with the crank, as it has a bad ring gear in it right now. I hope to get that fixed in a week or two, but it has been this way for three years. I remember when I was a kid cranking my old C in cold weather to pull dads diesel to get it started to feed cows with. It cranked right up every morning. We didn't run it long enough to keep the 6 volt battery charged enough to turn it with the starter on cold mornings.

I agree with you george, a good running Farmall WILL fire off on the first or second crank EVERY time. I got an old '37 F-12 on steel that kicks off on the first shot every time. I trust that old F-12 more than our JD 1050. I've yet to see another as reliable.

As I recall, the batteries we had thirty and forty years ago weren't nearly as good at holding a charge as the ones we have now.

If a vehicle had a twelve-volt system, my dad used to say you had to run it two or three times a month to keep the battery charged. This was certainly true of our old Chrysler.

Six volt batteries were even worse in this regard; dad used to start his Borgward and run it till warm once a week without fail.

His father used to get coals from the stove and put them under his Fordson to warm it in the coldest weather. Of course, he kept an eye out for fuel leaks...

Some As and Bs did not have a starter or lights, but even the ones that did came with a crank. The crank can be used when the starter will not work, or the battery is low, or even for some mechanical task. I use it to turn engines for finding top dead center when timing one or just checking for spark.

Why would you crank a tractor to start it when you could push a button?

For nostalgia"s sake of course!!! ;) When I was a 9yr old kid mowing hay with our Super A(starter-equipped), I"d crank-start that rascal anytime I could when grandad wasn"t looking! I used to be fascinated with crank-starting(probably comes from never having to REALLY do it to get the work done)....used to marvel that our "50 Chevy feed truck even had a crank hole through the radiator support, although we never had a crank for it....

Once the SA got older, less well-maintained, occasionally I"ve had to use the crank to start it when heavy hay kills the engine and the starter won"t turn it....got that fixed now though- pops right off with the starter again and the crank"s hopefully retired for good!

My dad bought a new I.H. KB5 in 1948, I remember it having that kind of starter. That truck is long gone however.Today I have a 53 Dodge 1 ton with that starter. The truck is used to haul firewood now.

Our 50 Chevy 1 ton feed truck had a foot starter...still have the truck, probably always will....dad bought it from my grandpa's(on mom's side) farm auction in 1972 and drove it home from near Omaha-which is a 5hr trip NOW, probably took at least 7hrs in that truck back then...top speed's probably 50 or so....mom remembers driving it to highschool occasionally back in the late 50's and she thought it was "old" then!

I just a couple weeks ago bought a 50 Chevy dumptruck on the same 1ton chassis(might be a bit heavier chassis) as our old grain truck. Worked on it and got it running just this afternoon, and yep, it has the footpedal starter. Only have 25 bucks invested in it plus a few feet of wire to convert it to 12v, and it runs ok and the hoist for the dump box works to boot!

I remember the foot pedal starter in the old trucks, we had one on the farm for a short time. It was an old red stepside truck that my dad bought, the first pick-up on our farm back in the early seventies. I learned to drive sitting on my dads lap going down the lane between the fields in that truck. Dad replaced it with a 1975 chevy 1 ton with a 454...
