W4 or the Super M

I have a 1941 McCormick W4 with an older restoration. A guy that I know is willing to trade a 1953 Farmall Louisville super M, with new paint, nice tires, and it has the mw live power on it. Just wondering if I should trade the W4 for the Louisville super M, or just keep the W4.

nathan , thats a tough call. peekin thru guy fays book, looks like around 3000 w-4's were built in 1941. those were the wartime tractors and availability was limited. i doubt if there are a whole lot of them left. i have a 42m that i got from a neighbor that bought it new in 42. tractors were sold on a lottery basis. i have the origional bill of sale. as the mechanical condition of the super m is unknown, i'd be a little nervous. if you use the w-4 you'll find out its a lot easier on gas that the super m.

As nice as a Louisville Super M is, it may be that the guy just prefers standard tractors, or, plans on hauling it...much easier to move around than the Super M: a good 1/2 ton and a #7000 trailer and you are in business...that Super M will take a little more hoss and carriage to move around. I want to know why he wants to trade. In my mind, there's a huge difference in these tractors. Still scratching my head about this and can only attribute it to personal preference. You did say that the Super M had new paint; what else has been done to it? New paint without knowing what else has gone on makes me a little wary. To me, the W4 is an interesting machine but a Super M is one of the all-time giants of the tractor world. But--I might be prejudiced-I have a 52 Super C, a 53 Super H, both restored and running, and a 54 Louisville Super M that's up in the shop with a rebuilt motor sitting on a stand waiting to go into it. But all of this is me speaking; I was raised on a Farmall M and still think the letter series Farmalls are the neatest tractors ever made.

I told him that I have a W4, and he said that the W4 is a hot item. Whether or not thats true, thats beyond me. I wanted a super M for the longest time, so I asked him if he would consider trading. He said that he would. I just don't want to get rid of the W4 and later on find out that I have made the wrong decision. The M&W live power (on the super M) is for the PTO. It works kind of like a hand clutch. I took the super M for a little ride, and it seemed to work great. I checked the oil and it looks good (no antifreeze) and checked the antifreeze and it was right up to the top. The transmission shifts fine, it has good power.

In a heartbeat. But that is me, and I like the brute dynamics of a SM. If there is a pretty good machine in the SM do it. But there is (as Mike points out) many reasons to think it over, sentement is one. JimN

Any idea why he wants to trade? That might help in the decision. Also, what are you doing with the W4? I would think the SM would be a better work machine over the W4, but if work isn't what you have in mind, then what has more sentimental value, or what is more collectable to you? I guess what I'm saying is: What benefit do you get out of the deal? Is it win/win?

Thank you for the input, it helps a lot. I have been stuck between a rock and a hard place trying to figure out what tractor I would be further off with. Would you know which tractor would be more collectible. Would you know anything about the Louisville super M. I heard from someone that being made in louisville makes it more rare than being made in rock island. Is that true?

Nathan, that is true. There was a little over 2600 made in Loisville. There were a little over 12000 total. I don't have one, but would like to. I have toured the Louisville Works in the 70s. There was what looked like 100 acres of 140s on the lot then. The day I was there they were loading trains with the 140s car after car. The old plant has been torn down. I do have three tractors that were built in Louisville A 49 C,53 Super C and a B. The Super M would go well with these.

me? No, I don't know squat, really. I'll tell you that I have personally seen less W4's in my life than SM's. I think row crops, in general, were more usable, and therefore more demanded, so, in turn, produced in greater numbers. As far as where the tractor was made, that interesting piece of information would only concern the most descerning of enthusiasts.

If I had no attachment to either tractor, the questions I would personally lean towards the SM because the only duties I would have it perform are parades/hay rides/fair duties... the Row Crop is more recognizable to the general public, and will be more accepted.

But that's me. I'm looking for an H. I'm in this game for sentimental reasons, and an H will fill that need. So would an M, but an M is heavier and harder to haul around for me.

Some people like to put a premium on the Louisville Super M's, but there are no differences other than the L on the serial tag. If it has factory live hydraulics it is a Stage 2 Super M, which is more desireable than the Stage 1, and other things being equal is worth several hundred more than either the W4 or the Stage 1 Super M. The Super M is a more useful all arund tractor, while the W4 is suited mostly to pulling implements, as it was not designed to use mounted implements. But, it is your decision.

I reread your post and saw that I missed that you said M&W hydraulics -- thus not worth that much more than one with a belly pump -- and replacement parts for that pump are hard to find.

The live power he mentioned may be the left pinion clutch, maybe not the hyd. Just thinking, JimN

Could be. I tend to think of the M&W hyd pump first because I have an M with one. That would add some value to the Super M.

Never had a W4 but had an M,a SM and a 300 I would keep the W4.
