My son who is a local volunteer fireman and EMT just left here. He went on a call today where a 14 year old was pouring gasoline into a tractor, while it was running, and it caught on fire. It burned the tractor and the boy...serious burns I am told. Lets be careful out there.

Thanks for the link Andy, I called the phone # & have new gas caps coming for my A & H. The original caps on the letter series & some number series were non vented. On a hot day or from running the tractor hard, pressure would build & cause vapor or fuel spray when the cap was opened.

Back in the 1960"s my Dad and an Uncle farmed togather they were plowing Dad was on the M Max was on the Utillity 330. The 330 had a gas cap with a plugged up vent hole so every so often you would have to reach up there and loosen it well Max losened it and the tractor cought on fire and burnt they had $500 ins. on it and that is what it took to fix it.

Please don't call me crazy, but I dumped oil in a 77 ford w/400 in the dark after just shutting it off and spilled 10w30. Yes it did catch fire, only thing I had was a pair of Carhardt coveralls in the Farm Fleet shopping bag, brand new. The coveralls put it out before the fire department got there. I drove it home afterwards, no harm done. I know it does not make sence, but it is a true story.

I have many times spilled gasoline on hot manifolds and never caught fire only once with a MF backhoe, and that was after I hit the starter.

My blessings to the boy, keep us posted if you will, those usualy are not so good. And to make it worse, avoidable. But we all have been there an tried that.

My old work boss's dad pulled a really dumb thing that got him badly burned. He used one of those electic drill driven pumps to pump gas out of the tractor gas tank. A spark from the drill started the gasoline on fire and he was badly burned and burned up the tractor. Having worked for a company that handles solvents all the time, I am sensitized to the dangers of flammable liquids and how many people have been killed or burned improperly handling it. We get casual with handling gasoline; because we are exposed to it almost daily when we fuel up our vehicles. Roger

I wonder what kind of tractor. In an old farmall the tank is too far back for a spill to touch the hot engine.

A while back a guy was checking the fuel level of a power cart at night. He used his lighter and looked into the pour spout. The vapors flashed and took off his eyebrows and the front of his hair. Hurt his skin too. He was found sufficiently stupid to not only risk himself, but a 200+ million dollar aircraft. (The cart was right under the wing). He was busted down a rank and not allowed near the aircraft anymore.

That has nothing to do with the original subject, but it made me remember it.

Yep. All it takes is a bare spot on a plug wire, or a particle of red hot carbon from the exhaust, combined with some gasoline vapors. My uncle ruined the paint on a cub gas tank that way. mike

While I wouldn't throw gas on a hot engine, it takes a spark of some sort. On the Ford 8N, with the engine off, but still hot, I have overfilled the gas tank and had gas sizzle as it hit the exhaust pipe which was directly underneath the gas tank -- I tended to be more careful after that. Static electricity will do it too. My father in law burned up a W6 with the engine off.

Mike,

I had a cousin burn up an H back about 35 years ago. He poured gas in and it was running and caught fire and burned up. He wasnt hurt but the tractor was a total loss. I didnt even find out about this until two years ago.
