IH 404 Hydraulics - Again

Hi,

New pump works. Got air out of lines. Final concern. When the remote hydraulic lever is engaged with nothing attached the engine will load and stall if the rpm's aren't up. Same thing happens when the wheels are turned to their extreme of travel. This doesn't happen when the 3 point is lifted all the way.

Thanks.
kent

This is not something I read in a manual but yearsago an experenceed heavy equipment operator/ mechanic told me that if a hyd. pump did not stall the engine at an idle it is weak. For another opion go to the Oliver Forum and contact J. Swiebert at aschwieb@bright.net. I believe he used to be an Oliver mechanic but the basics would be the same. Armand

Bob is correct you have a releif not working . You could send that new pump to lunch real fast or even get injured. Hyd . pressure is nothing to fool with . It can Kill. If ya don't have a gauge get one that is able to read TWICE what the system can handel and a hose that can handel the same . Also make sure that you have a book and read before ya do anything. That is why i use my flow rater when checking hyd. pressure as i can reg. the pressure as i go and if it startes to get to far over rated pressure i can control it and find why it is going over . . Now i know you can't go and lay out the mega. bucks for a flow rater but you can afford a good liquid gages that will read 5000 PSi.

When the steering, or a remote cylinder reaches the end of it's stroke, a pressure relief valve is forced open, to allow the oil still being pumped by the pump to "return to sump".

SOME loading of the engine while this is going on is NORMAL.

If the loading seems excessive, it would be a good idea to check the steering and remote hydraulic bypass pressures against "specs" in the shop manual, 'cause if these pressures are excessive, pump or timing gear damage can occur.

A 424 (I have one) has a steering relief in the "flow divider" and a hydraulic relief in on the "endplates" next to the remote valve.

I THINK your's is similar, but don't know for sure.

HOPEFULLY, all is well, and you are seeing normal loading of the engine when the hydraulics bypass, but for safety's sake, it is certainly a good idea to check the pressures!

That is natural. The lift stops trying to draw oil when at the end of its stoke and the other things do not. If it is stalling engine at the end of cycle it is operating right. With eveything engaged and nowhere for oil to go it loads the engine. Kinda like trying to pull something that will not move.
