Did you try Kunkle Service Company? I think they have a store in Queenstown. Hal

its not impossible to think they they are both in need of repair. The "cracks" may be superficial as jim suggested, or they may actually be cracks, but not enough to cause issues while on the engine. I would be worried about reusing them as they are tho, as the manipulation of them from taking them off and when retorquing them could be enough to cause issues with the cracks.

Get a second opinion on the "cracked" head, not all diagnosis is to the bennefit of the person paying. Some aparent cracks are superficial. JimN

personally if I were you i would buy a 400 head if you are going to pull. But thats my opinion. Clean those farmall m heads up and if the one head has cracks just junk it and the other see if you could get a few bucks for it.

Cracked heads can be repaired by a cast iron weld specialist. I had mine repaired and it's been running strong for two years now. It was cheaper for me to repair my M head than it was to get a 400-450 head. Besides, most 400-450 heads are the same head that was on the M in the first place. As long as you have an 8574 casting head you have a good head. There is only one head that fits that is a better head I do believe the cast numfor that is 362174, which was usde on later 400-450 models.

I hate hearing those words "just junk it".

They aren't making any more M's, even though there are a lot around, there are fewer every year. Whoever thought all the old Model T's would one day be scarace? Every head that goes to the junk yard is one more that cannot be used as-is or repaired.

Many of these old heads are cracked, but they are just surface cracks. They are so thick the cracks do no harm. Machine shops don't have to be crooks to say they're no good. They are comparing the heads to what they see on light automobile heads. They just don't know there is nothing wrong with the heads. I'll bet $100 they did not do a pressure test and actually found a leak.

I totally agree. I hate those words as well. Junk yards are a necessary evil the way I see it. Guys like us can breath new life into an antique tractor because we can get obsolete parts from those junkyards. Hey, if he wants to get rid of 'em, give 'em to me. I'll even pay shipping.
