The Farmall red paint on my trailor is flaking off very bad. It looks like there is gray primer underneath which is in pretty good shape. I want to repaint the trailor with enamel, but I don't know if I am putting the right paint on this primer. What is the rule about mixing latex primer and enamel paint ?

I doubt if it is latex primer, latex doesn't last very long on metal. However, in a few years all automotive paint will be water based due to environmental regulations. Sand the red paint off, preferably the primer also, and use epoxy (2 part) primer. The epoxy is water proof. Most minor chips will only go down to the primer, and won't rust underneath. At a minimum paint with acrylic enamel. Since your trailer likely sits outside, acrylic enamel won't fade as much as the cheaper paints. You can also use Case-IH 2150 red, which is better than the farm store stuff.

I should rephrase the question. Will enamel paint stick to a latex primer ?
